HOrnbrod Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Figure it's worth a shot. Stupidly I sold mine years ago.
HOrnbrod Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 Probably not. When I saw your quick response to my "Wanted" request I got all excited hoping you had one. Oh well, if I can't find one I go ahead and relocate the shifter to the floor console.
Keyav8r Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Don, Not to hijack your thread, but are the '91 clusters specific to that year only? My voltmeter doesn't work and I'm wondering if, after I check all the wiring out and turns out good, I can use a voltmeter from another year MJ or XJ. Still have the gas gauge issue but haven't had time to check the wiring on it yet. Will probably try to attack both problems at the same time. Fred
HOrnbrod Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Fred, the voltmeter, temperature, and oil pressure gauges are interchangeable in the clusters throughout the years. The face colors may vary, but these gauges will all operate. The tachometer, speedometer, and fuel gauges are Renix or HO specific. You can easily check the voltmeter by removing it and applying battery voltage across the + and - gauge terminals. It the gauge deflects properly, then you have a wiring problem to trace out.
Keyav8r Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Thanks, Don. I have the original "3/4" cluster from the '88 that I replaced with a full cluster. The volt meter was working on it so that gives me a spare if needed.
johnj92131 Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Don, Imagine you have done an EBay search for the "police" package - some had column shifters I understood. Is the column shifter cable and indicaer the same as in the 87 - 90 Renix? That might widen the search field.
HOrnbrod Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Is the column shifter cable and indicaer the same as in the 87 - 90 Renix? That might widen the search field. Unlike the full gauge blue Renix cluster cases, the white full gauge 91 and up cluster cases do not have the shift indicator mounting bosses. So there is no way to mount the indicator w/o using the HO idiot light cluster. If I could get my hands on one of these HO idiot light clusters that had column shift, I could modify it to full gauges by changing out the back foil. If that makes any sense.

Makes perfect sense to me. That is exactly what I will have to do with my own 91 column shifter - Have not figured out a clean way to make the tach face look perfectly stock. Meaning the cut out for the gear indicator. Have played with lifting the back foil.

Haven't had my hands on either the new or the old clusters, but I had an idea... Is there no way to custom-make some PRNDL mounting bosses for the '91+ cluster? They wouldn't even have to be pretty - just functional.
carnuck Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Someone stole BOTH of the gauge sets I had with the prndl setup this past summer. I pulled the needle and faceplate off the '73 J4000 column and I will be mounting it on my column.
