Radio Has Me Goin Insane

Recommended Posts

ok so this is really botherin me and i can't put it off anymore, this started happenin a few days ago, FM radio would start comin and goin non-stop untill then it's crystal clear, CDs play crystal clear, if i find an AM radio station that comes in is even crystal clear which is sayin somethin, i've checked to make sure all the wires in the back of the radio were plugged in still and yes even the antanna wire, i had my dad hook my radio up when i got it and he spliced the wires into the factory wires like he has on every other vehicle before, the radio i have we have had before and never had this issue, could it be the radio goin bad or what? there is no whinnin noise commin from the speakers, when i take off the radio stops puttin out sound like someone just turned it off and it's drivin me insane, any ideas?

Get a can of CO2. I can't think of the trade name now but any Radio supply will carry it. Blast each of the components in the FM section, assuming you have schematic, Otherwise just everything. Just hit one component at a time and give it time to recover before going to the next one. I'm suggesting the freeze method first because as the radio plays, it warms up. Wiggle each component for a loose solder joint. Get a new radio.

i've tried wigglin every wire and nothin changed, the only thing i can not check is the antanna wire, i can't get enough slack in it to track it through my wirey mess under my dash, is there anyway to test is with a multimeter?

Go over to the passenger side kicker panel reach behind it and pull up and out the bigger wire. (softly) It will be your antenna wire. 5 bucks says its unplugged or partly unplugged. That's a pretty common issue. I can get pictures later if you need them.

Time out.

You wrote above that it cuts out when you take off. Does it only cut out when on radio, or does it also cut out when playing a CD?

I seriously doubt it's the antenna. You can usually pick up strong, nearby stations with NO antenna, and if you lose the signal you should get hiss, or "hash."

I'm leaning toward a bad ground of the radio chassis to the dashboard.

it was not the antenna that i could see, it was all plugged in completely, i took it to the pawn shop down the street and they had the exact radio i had, tried it in the truck and it was crystal clean, ended up buyin a new radio, it was not the ground either cause i retested and wired my whole radio, i'd still like a few pictures of the antenna wire cause mine looks like someone bought 2 and connected em,

Question: When it happens, does the blower (whether you have AC or not) also stop running? If so, look to the ignition switch on the lower right-hand side of the steering column. In some cases they overheat and melt, causing flaky behavior form the radio (and all the other devices that draw current through the ignition switch).

I have the same problem. The radio works fine when not moving but as soon as I start driving it cuts in and out. Disconnecting the antenna has no effect. CD's play fine. Seems like when I turn right the cutting in and out stops, accelerating increases the cutting in and out. When I brake it ends the cutting in and out.  I have cleaned the grounds which did fix three problems. 1) the gas gauge now works 2) The buzzer for key in ignition works 3) overhead light turns on when driver door opens. The last two where fixed when I cleaned the door switch. I have had this problem since I bought this truck and just live with it.
