Stretched Cab Detailes?

Recommended Posts

Myself and another NAXJA member had LOOOOONG discussions about doing just that.

Seems to me, the easiest route would be to take a 2dr XJ, cut it at the a-pillars and then across the floor/unibody a few inches ahead of the rear part of the door jamb.  Make those same cuts to the MJ, sleeve the hollow unibody parts, then slide the 2 halves together, connecting or even overlapping the floors and unibody rails for strength.

I do know that one of our CC members put together a 4dr using the XJ front half and MJ rear half and discovered that the width of the bodies and body line contour at the rocker panels was different between the MJ and XJ.  Not sure how he ended up making the two halves play nice together in that area but I do recall he did get the halves together before he sold the project.

I agree that the added cargo area and increased leg room would be damn-near worth all that effort.  I'm not sold on the overall look of the longer doors on a pick up cab but again, the trade off may be worth it to some.

Personally, rather than a 4dr "crew" cab MJ, I'd like to do the 2dr splice with a bit extra added to the back of the cab.  That would be optimal in my book.  Unfortunately, in order to pull that off, you need to either commit to the XJ roof all the way back and trim the top of the MJ cab roof line at the back, or section in another bit of MJ cab roof to extend the cab.

Never sold it she's still sitting in my backyard with interior in. Never figured out an easy way to get the rockers lined up so I cut them out and am replacing them with 2x6 box tube rockers. Still have to get a set of 2dr doors to create the rear doors for it but it runs and drives doorless just fine. As for stretching it to make it accept factory 2dr doors the idea of cutting a 2dr xj then the front of the mj is good but make sure when you do you leave extra of the outside skin of the rockers so you can overlap them would probably be the easiest. But keep the back part of the xj to use parts of the roof to graft onto the mj roof as the mj roof is smooth and the xj has the ribs running the length of it. The other thing you need to keep part of is the trans tunnel hump and you can maybe graft the two together.
