89MJMILSPEC
Purchased my 89 mj for a song not running..... The previous owner told me it was the injectors not working so I got it to start and run on starting fluid. I brought it home and I can hear the fuel pump priming when you first turn the key, and according to the noid light set all 6 injectors are getting signal. I installed 4 neon injectors due to an oversight on my part(bought 8 injectors but only 4 were right and I didn't check), and still have a no start condition. I am going to be renting a fuel pressure tester tomorrow to double check that it is maintaining while cranking, is there anything else I should look into? Thank you before hand for any insight you may offer.
87manche1
Are u sure its fuel related? Exhaust smell at all or oil like gas?

89MJMILSPEC
Are u sure its fuel related? Exhaust smell at all or oil like gas? At the time I posted that last night I hadnt had the truck running on its own to be able to smell the exhaust. Fuel filter clogged up? Fuel in tank actually diesel, jello or solvent? I was getting good fuel at the rail after the pump had primed, just wasnt 100% on the pressure. Just as an update, I was able to get the truck to run on its own. No water or oil smell through the exhaust, a slight misfire which could be coming from one or both of the OEM injectors. Its rather hard to start and you have to give it a bit of throttle to get it to start. I am going to reset the timing after I figure out the proper procedure. Radialmech
Having to give it throttle to start sounds to me like it may have an induction system leak. It's too lean on fuel to start, giving it some throttle would richen up the mixture. Also vacuum or induction leaks will make an engine run rough, not want to idle. Look for holes in the vacuum lines, check the rubber pieces on the throttle body. Mice like to chew holes in things. If it has been sitting a couple of years, then their is a good chance that mice have gotten ahold of it. What engine do you have? If it is a 4.0 like mine, the timing is non-adjustable, it is controlled by the ECU/ECM. When I first bought my truck it would run great for 10 minutes and then die. It would start right up again after sitting for 10 minutes or so and cooled down. I finally figured out the wires on the crankshaft position sensor were getting hot and breaking contact. I swapped in a new one and have not had any trouble with it since.
89MJMILSPEC
I will check all the vacuum lines. The "emission control" light is on. I don't know how to go about checking what would be causing that so Off to the search engine I go. The truck does seem to go down the road quite well, I took it on a short trip just to check it out. It would seem that it has a rather high gear in the rear axle.

cruiser54
Do a fuel pressure test. The sound of a pump priming is no guarantee of proper fuel pressure or volume.
Timeless
Do a fuel pressure test. The sound of a pump priming is no guarantee of proper fuel pressure or volume. This. Cruiser previously helped me find out that there is a flexible hose on the fuel pump (in the tank) that likes to disintegrate. If the pump is priming and you're not getting pressure at the rail, this hose is most likely the problem.
89MJMILSPEC
I had noticed the distinct odor of fuel in and around the truck at which point I started looking for the cause of the odor.... I found out the previous owner had somehow almost removed the pump from the tank with the bed still firmly attached. The retaining rin and the top plate of the pump are hanging over the edge of the top side of the tank. The connectors at the filter are also loose. I am still working on getting the bed off (waiting on a little assistance lifting it) so I can re-install the pump and see what else he may have fiddled with. 89MJMILSPEC
I now see the errors of my ways as well as the previous owners. It would seem that he removed the fuel pump to tank o-ring. There is also a zip tie holding the remainder of the fuel level arm all the way up.I do see that the pump is removable with the bed in place. 89MJMILSPEC
Well as a small update the fuel pump which was working before I pulled the tank/ bed no longer works. I tested the pump with it out of the truck altogether and no life.
