88 Mj Electrical Issues

Recommended Posts

First off I'm new to the forum...so Hello Fellow MJ junkies. :rock on:

I have an 88 MJ. Ive had it for a while and i'll post its story and pics one day soon. But i need help cause it's my daily jeep now!

Issue 1: all the lights work normal except the Driver side brake light, it does not come on when applying brakes. Top light comes on when i use the turn signal but no brake light. Then when i turn on the running lights, all the running lights come on but the driver side middle light(brake light) stays on like you have the brakes applyed!? Its really frustrating! :fs1:

Issue 2: Why do my turn signal indicators in the gauge cluster come on and stay on when i turn the running lights on????Has had this issue since the day i got it! :fs2: dang gremlins!

If any one could point me in the right direction that would be amazing! O ya, all the light bulbs are new.

Thank you

Well, I just had your second issue answered via shout box, believe it or not:

Automan2164 (28 August 2013 - 07:18 AM)pfcleist... Check the bulbs in the tails and turns on that side. The running lights can backfeed into the turns if the bulbs aren't clocked correctly in the socket.

PFCLeist : (27 August 2013 - 11:45 PM)Why is it, when the cluster lights are on, the left turn signal lights constantly? I've seen this in several MJs, seems like a common issue.

As for your first issue, I'd say check grounds, bulbs, connections, pretty much the routine for any electrical problem.

Edit: Oh yeah! Welcome to the addiction.

Click on the link in my signature and go to the post called "connector refreshing". There's a photo of a 10 pin connector that gets all corroded. Start with that.

The Ground Refreshing is always a good idea. Click on that one.

Are you aware of the lighting ground behind the driver's side taillamp?

Usually when the blinker light stays on in your instrument panel is because on the side that the light stays on that either a bad bulb, the bulb not installed correctly or just not the correct bulb....

*edit* can be other electrical problems...but start with the basics

My MJ was torn down to cab/frame and cleaned. All grounds have been cleaned and reinstalled. I pulled most of the wiring harness, cleaned and installed with new grease. All light bulbs work and i have turned the bulbs every way they can go. SO far nothing helps!? All the bulbs are new as well. What bulbs should be in the turn signals??

Either way Thanks for the help. I just have to keep digging.

O ya about to install my lift!  Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the forum on getting rid of that load level/brake bias thingy on my bed, I have a 44 out of an 87 XJ so it has drums and i just want to get rid of that thing.
