Oddmodman
I upgraded from my pugeot to my aisin without issue, except now the transfer case linkage is out of place by an inch and a half or so (seems the entire bracket that's bolted to the body is too far forward)? Am I the only one with this problem, or have others dealt with it, and if so how?
nitroxsteve
I think the t-case linkage is specific to each trans.
HKB3
When I did mine I swapped the linkage from the donor XJ, it's been a few years so I do not remember if I had to modify anything else.
AeroNautical
I've heard of this problem when using an aw4 t-case linkage with any other tranny, like an ax15, because auto tranny/t-case combos are longer. But as far as I know the pukey and ax15 4wd are the same length, thus the linkage should be the same. I know this doesn't help your problem, just stating what I've been told. Oddmodman
Well I think the linkage is exactly the same. What I believe is different is the bracket that's screwed into the body, where the first pivot point of the linkage is located, seems to be too far forward. I could just make a custom linkage like here (http://comancheclub.com/topic/14149-transfer-case-linkage/) but I'd rather not take that time. Just hoping someone knows something I don't. ParadiseMJ
When I did the same swap I had to snag the linkage bracket for the AW4. IIRC the TC linkage pivot was built right in to the BA-10. Since the AW4 is longer, I had to move the body side pivot back about an inch...was not that hard to do as you're only drilling in to the body sheet metal to line up the body side pivot up with the tranny side pivot. I have a picture of it from Stu's Offroad tranny swap page...but it's on my work computer...I'm on vacation til next week.
ParadiseMJ
I found the article. He did an AW4 into a TJ, but the principle is the same...scroll down to "More AW4 swap" 6 pages I think, to the part where he's doing the linkage modification for the TC. http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/aw-4/aw-4-11.htm
nitroxsteve
Do you have the bracket that was from the ax15 trans or are you using the one from the ba10?
skidoo_j
just get this... you'll love it. http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/shifters/sk2xc.htm Night and day in operation smoothness. Plus it's adjustment is way more direct and it also eliminates popping out of 4x4 due to drivetrain twist. I love mine.
64 Cheyenne
Said it time and again.... When doing a BA-10 to AX-15 or 2wd to 4wd, You need to grab EVERYTHING, the body side bracket is specific to the AX-15 The hole will be towards the rear, right where you need it to be. If I'm grabbing this from a wrecked Jeep, i use a utility knife to cut the carpet to get the four bolts out.
Oddmodman
Thanks for the input guys. I'll look it up. 64 Cheyenne, I bought the comanche with a seized pugeot and an ax15 in the bed that the PO had pulled and never installed, so I just used what I had. Modified my trans crossmember and stuck it in. Now I just have this hurdle and it'll all be gravy. I'm selling the thing anyway.
64 Cheyenne
drill a hole in it then, maybe weld a washer to it as a bushing or maybe the hardware store might have some sort of bushing.
Oddmodman
I decided I'm going to go the custom route and make the DIY Turnbuckle solution that's posted in the DIY section. Thanks for all the input though guys.
64 Cheyenne
I decided I'm going to go the custom route and make the DIY Turnbuckle solution that's posted in the DIY section. Thanks for all the input though guys. That's the direction I started to go at first, what a major PIA... Spent more time and effort than it was worth, if I calculated time and effort, I could have easily bought one of these: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/shifters/kit_sk2x.htm So after all the effort, I went back to a stock linkage, why? because the custom one I did went on the 87 moneypit and I never got a chance to try it out. Chances are pretty good that I'm gonna buy one of the Novak kits anyway. BTW I did finish it, goes through all the gears just fine, never tried it out though. Another reason I decided against it was I got a Terra Low 4:1 with 2Low kit in it and didn't want to mess with anything that wasn't commercially engineered to shift it. Oddmodman
What was so difficult about it? It looks pretty easy.
64 Cheyenne
Cuttin, modifying, welding the lever arms. Just took more time than it was worth. For ease of getting on the road and cost, you can't beat the stock linkage. My 88 Chief used to pop out of 4 low till I replaced motor mounts, I'd still back (use) the stock linkage.
