Help With Ac Conversion To 134A

just getting my 91 mJ.  on the road, but need to get my ac going too hot to drive home from work every day now. so not sure what is what on the back of the compressor. I have the kit to change the ports just not sure how to get it apart or much about the oil I need , any info  you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

If there is nothing wrong with your old system and it simply doesn't blow cold, i would try evacuating it. If there is a leak, find it and fix it then recharge it with R12. A/C is probably one of the most expensive repairs there is, even on a jeep. You can easily run up a bill of 2k if you have it all done at a shop.  I had the old R12 system, but decided to swap to the r134a when the compressor started squealing. I got ALL of my a/c components from the junkyard, ya i said it the junkyard and it works great.  In total my a/c repair/refit cost a total of 150 bucks, this includes parts, refrigerant, oil, and recharge.

 

can't remember for the life of me how much oil or refrigerant it took, but your local auto parts store should have the answer. I would advise going to NAPA.

thanks, I just got a new dryer from napa yesterday. I have the conversion kit just not sure witch fitting is the right one for my truck, they give you 4 in the kit . The kit work for fords Gm products ect. Does anybody know of website that has a how to video on this conversion? Maybe MJ specific? Ineed to know how much oil to use and should I drain the old oil out? how do I do that? Take off the compressor? I have a lot of unknowns here. Any  input would be great thanks.

update got the ac fixed today. Was a lot of work, removed the compressor changed the ports tried to get the oil out not much came out. installed the new dryer, and sorted out how the valves work on the compressor need to use a1/4" open end wrench to turn the stem on the low pressure port to fill, then you will need to close it so the system can  circulate the 134a then it will cool. took me some time to see that's what was going on. valves do not work the way I was thinking.

Valves are a 3-way valve.  stem out is off the test port and the hose and compressor are open to each other for normal operation.  Halfway is open to test port, compressor, and hose/system.  stem in all the way/short is hose is cut off from compressor and you have the ability to remove the compressor and swap it without a full recharge as the hoses are sealed from atmosphere.  They are called service valves for this reason.

ok, thanks ,that's great to know wish I had known that sooner. I charged the system with the valve in\short but could not get it to cool until I moved the valve position to the out position may need to remove 1 can from the system. Do you know how much it should take for a full factory charge? can't seem to find the info now for some reason 2.8 lbs sticks in my head . no sticker on the truck,can't find it in my manual. anybody have a number?

Just to up date the thing cools good only one problem now, it only blows through the defrost . I think it may be a vacuum problem. any ideas where to start to look? seems like I fix one thing only to find something else! can't see an end to that anytime soon.

Only blowing out of defrost could easily be a cracked connection to the vacuum tank in the bumper, or a the tank itself could be cracked.  The main vac line going to the tank runs along the passenger fender.

Ok that's a good start, i'm going to get on it in a few . I hope it's a line or the tank . If it's the tank where can I get one to replace it? The tanks behind the front bumper? not sure I ever saw it so may be awall this truck had some front end damage before I got it, so who knows what I will find. Just getting in  to the smaller things now hope this it a small problem. will let you all know what I find, thanks for the insight.
