Little Xj Problem

Well i didnt know where else to ask this, so. But anyways. My brothers cherokee for some reason won't swap into 2wd. And it can't be the linkage cause it doesnt exist currently. What could do this?

Without linkage how are you trying to SHIFT the TC? I would assume you're reaching up from underneath and moving, or trying to move the shift lever by hand. Is the lever moving at all? Is it moving into, out of all 4 positions OK?

It seems to shift fine. Just all but neutral has the front shaft moving. I didnt get to mess with it very long though. I'm gonna shift it alot and hope itll come out. Also at slow speeds theres a soft thump underneath the truck, could this sound be part of it? And yes, i reach up underneath to shift

1992+ front axles and earlier disconnect axles that have been modified to be permanently connected will always spin the front drive shaft regardless of transfer case position.

I feel so stupid right now -.- thanks alot Alexia. Nowjust to find the actual 2wd spot so it isnt running 4wd. Comepletely forgot which way the tcase linkage started

Just pull the front shaft out until you get linkages.

I think I'm gonna find neutral, that will tell which is 4l cause itll be the next one. Then just go the opposite way till it stops and it should be 2h. I think at least

2WD is the lever on the transfer case pushed all the way forward towards the front of the vehicle.

pull all the way down on the tcase shift lever ( on tcase) =4 lo,

push all the way up on the tcase shift lever (on tcase) = 2 Hi

 

i don't have a 4wd linkage yet ( been shiftin manually for a year LOL

here's another thing ive been wondering. Is the lever on the t-case supposed to be more so pointing up in all the selections? My father had done some stuff to the truck and i didny know what, i think he was working on a upward pointing lever to make a stronger linkage, i just don't know if he actually ever made the lever point a different way. Thanks

No, the lever should be pointing towards the ground, but it can be flipped upside down.

That explains alot about why the linkage parts i actually have, didnt seem to work or line up. Gonna get that swapped over and get the last linkage piece from a junkyard soon.
