2Wd Ax15 To 4Wd Aw4 Swap

Recommended Posts

pretty much as the title says, I'm looking to make my 92 mj 4x4 on my college kids budget. mecanically eveything will bolt up fine, but I'm worried about what i'll need to add for the aw4 to operate. i found a good deal on a bajashifter from radesigns and from what i understand that should be enough to atleast get the truck moving again. but seeing as its currently my daily driver, atleast till i get my turbo swap done on my impreza. i don't want start swaping things with out knowing if it'll work right.

You'll need the transmission control module which is located under the passenger side dash.  As far as how to hook it up, the NSS, and any other various wires/electrical to a Jeep designed for a manual... :dunno:  I've heard it's a lot easier to go from automatic to stick than vice versa, but it can be done.  Honestly though, I think it would be easier for you to find an AX-15 and transfer case already bolted up and swap that in.  This is of course assuming you wanted to keep it a manual.

You can use the floor shifter out of any XJ with the AW4 tranny. And the tranny control unit (TCU) for the XJ is the same as for the MJ. If you can't score a TCU right away, you can shift manually.. You'll lose second gear, and the torque converter won't lock. But that can be overcome with a simple toggle switch.

So all the trans harness and stuff is completely seperate from the main harness, except for power?

you're also gonna need a TPS for an automatic transmission because there's a connector that goes from the TPs to the transmission as well.

Also remember that 91 and up use a 23 spline out put shaft instead of the 21 spline in the renix era

ok little more update, i have a co worker with a 96 2wd xj he is scrapping, so i am getting all of the aw4 stuff out of it. pedals, harness tcu, cables, everything. a buddy of mine is giving me a 21 spline 242, and all i need to get now is a sye for that 242 and a custom driveshaft for my MJ. that should be everything i need for this swap.
