drase
When I turn on the MJ as soon as the engine starts running exhaust smell is in the cab. I have to drive with the windows down otherwise it will give me a headache and probably kill me! I've looked all underneath the truck and do not see any holes. Is there any troubleshooting I should do to pinpoint the problem? A friend said it might be a clogged catalytic converter (Is the original 26 yr old exhaust). Thomas
Mine was doing that when I had the tubes from the air filter to the valve cover off..that's just because I have valve blow by! Look for any holes in your fire wall and headers...good luck!
HOrnbrod
Probably rotten, clogged, or disconnected vacuum hoses on your evap cannister. It can smell like exhaust and/or fuel. The cannister is located on the right firewall, engine compartment.
Keyav8r
Look for holes in the firewall first. It's got to get in the cab somehow. Put a trouble light in each side of the cab, look from under the hood and under the truck. If you don't see anything that way, hang the light on each side of the engine shining toward the firewall and look in under the dash on both sides. Check the gasket between the exhaust manifold and the down pipe and check the manifold and pipe for holes. When I got my MJ i had the same problem. The manifold had been patched after the flange broke off and the speedometer cable was missing. Exhaust gases came form the leaking joint through the hole for the speedo cable. I put one of those muffler wraps around the joint, reinforced with a few warps of good old baling wire, and taped over the hole. Exhaust gas gone! I'm putting a new manifold (and complete exhaust system) and speedo cable in as part of the re-build to fully fix the problem
jeepdoggydogB
On my truck admittedly an HO had the hose from the air filter to valve cover ruptured causing smell, oil blow by, and high idle. This likely wouldn't apply to your Renix but I also had a cracked header in 5 places with the exhaust manifold stud broken off nearest the firewall. Now, with new exhaust manifold and hoses there is no more exhaust smell in the cab.

drase
That might be my problem. I don't think I have a evap canister. I have a 87, could it be somewhere else?
drase
Also I noticed below that it appears the EGR valve does not a hose connected to it and is there supposed to be a hose connected to the airbox that is facing the firewall? Below I also noticed where my finger is pointing the hose ends, is it supposed to do that for connect somewhere else?

Zebvance
Looks like you have quite a few hoses missing. Look up the vacuum hose scimatics. Should tell you everything. You are suppose to have 3 hoses going into your air box in your picture. 1 of those smaller hoses affect how the truck runs. With yours being no existant you should have a very high idle right now. And yes you are missing the hose on the egr also
87manche1
Also the rear valve cover hose is mia

Since I don't have a evap canister can someone post a pic of how their's is mounted?
drase
Update: Found out the fuel smell in the cab was caused by a leaking fuel line that caused fuel to leak on the manifold when truck was turned on. Also a failing fuel pump. After these 2 were replaced she runs great and no fuel smell! DIdn't even need the evap canister!
