Xj Diesel

Just a quickie ...locally (sort of) I found a '85 xj 2dr, 4wd, 5spd diesel for sale.

Motor is out, maybe gone, ad says one owner, think it shows 75k miles, pics look pretty decent. Original turbine wheels, matching michelins, decent interior, etc.

My mind says way too nice and rare to part out, but ...

 

would this have 4.10 gears? Or 4.56?

Very likely.10. I believe the 4:56 ratio was only standard in 2.5 Automatic transmission equipt vehicles, and even then it may have just been an option. ;)

www.car-part.com shows 3:73 and 3:31 available in an XJ that year.

Don't think it's worth much without the diesel with it. Someone was asking $800 for one in Winnipeg a while back. Think it was around twice the mileage, but it ran and drove.

Thanks, Comanchekid, I have no idea whether the diesel models had steep gears or something like 3.07s.

With only, what, 80 or 100 horses from a little renault diesel , I was thinking it needed all the help it could get.

It is too nice to junk (by the pics) but all I am interested in it for is sheet metal and axles

Though I DID do a quick look on ebay and found a Toyota JDM takeout diesel engine/automatic/transfer unit nearby ...starting at a mere $2k.

 

So, a $2000-2500 engine/trans in a $700 xj, sounds like a plan. Not.  Sorry, xj.

WD TDI's ten years old are going for $1500 to $2500 at salvage auctions around here. Older non-turbo VW's I've seen go for under $500. You'd still need a trans/tc if the xj doesn't have, but then you've got the rest of the car to part out or scrap or whatever. Just a suggestion if you're seriously thinking about it.
