Blue88Comanche
A few weeks ago I removed the open carrier from my MJ to install an Aussie locker, the only thing keeping me from installing it was s roll pit that just would not come out... The past several weekends i spent hours trying to get it out only to add to a pile of bent tools instead. I finally gave up and took it to a machine shop Friday they where busy that day but said it would be ready Monday and they would call me when it was ready. So by Tuesday I still have not heard from then so i called to check on the progress, his exact words where "We are still trying to get the damn pin out without damaging anything".. that kinda made me feel better knowing I was not the only person having issues with that pin.. lol on the plus side I will be getting my axle shaft back from them with new bearings pressed on
SW86
as crazy as this sounds, i used an allen wrench to knock mine through. worked pretty damn good with a BFH hitting on it
Blue88Comanche
i bent 4 allen wrenches, 3 drift bunch, and sacrificed 3 screwdrivers for their shaft.. I also smashed my hand with the BFH I was using, still now luck... I called the machine shop, still no progress, but the carrier might be low on their to do list. SW86
did you try spraying it with PB or something like it? i used the smaller curved end on the allen and held the longer end as i smacked it. as it got going i simply switched ends. I'm sure there are better ways but it worked for me. if i were you id get it back from the shop before they continue (free of charge surely) and give it another go myself. its one of those things you just have to keep going at. ive been there many times. just keep at it
mvusse
I have a screw driver in my tool box that I ground the blade off. Has not let me down yet, 7 carriers and counting. Maybe someone worked on yours before and was afraid it could come out so they coated it in epoxy?
MancheKid86
heat the carrier up around the roll pin, turn a can of air duster upside down and blast the roll pin, punch that sucker out

Blue88Comanche
Still can't get the pin out... I am about ready to buy another open carrier... I need new rear gears anyway. I put a Trac-Lok carrier in till I get everything I need for the new carrier to be setup. I just need to move the truck from where it is to my house, then later to a local shop. Being that the gears are not setup at this point would this be acceptable?
Mountain Dude
It may sound silly, but are you sure its a roll pin? You don't specify which axle you are talking about. A D30 has a roll pin, Some D35s and D44's have a screw instead of a roll pin. Can you see through the centre of it? If not, maybe you have a screw type lock pin and the head is busted off. No amount of pounding is going to get that sucker out. You will need to drill it and use an easy out.
87manche1
Under his tag says d30 d44 he doesnt say which one hes working on id bet the d44 tho
Blue88Comanche
It's a d44, and its a roll pin I guess it's about half way out but it's stuck, I can't see through it so there may have been something rammed in the middle of the pin, but not all the way. HOrnbrod
If you don't use the correct size on a roll pin you'll never get it out. The D44 pin is 3/16" I'm fairly certain.

jimoshel
Use a hydraulic press and apply enough pressure to the cross pin to shear the retaining pin. Then worry about getting the retaining pin out, which should be easier since it's now in 2, or 3 pieces.
87manche1
I was gonna stay that jim or drill it out

JFAComanche6
I usually hire a wise magician to poof into my garage for these kinds of things. But on a serious note, heat the hell out of the casing and it should come right out.
