Fasteners That Hold The Front Rubber Inner Fender Liner

Getting ready for paint, and noticed that there are some plastic rivets of some type used to attach the rubber mud flaps and skirting onto the fronts of the MJ.

I'm wanting to remove the flaps/skirting for paint prep, and to be able to get to the front bumper bolts. What are you guys using to replace these fasteners with on reassembly?

 

I'm assuming they are OEM???

I scored all my panel fasteners at my local ACE hardware.

 

The ones that hold the "vent" on the b pillar, the ones for the splash gaurd, even the ones that hold the plastic trim to the side of the seat bottom.

If you have a decent hardware store with a decent nut/bolt/screw department, they'll probably have them.  There might even be some in the HELP! section at NAPA, AutoZone, Oreilly's etc.

I use this place, and have had great success finding exact matches to OEM fasteners at a low price. Unfortunately, some of the fasteners come in large quanities...

We don't have an ACE here, but we do have an Autozone. Will check out the Help section, but don't remember seeing anything like that before.

Got mine on ebay they also make a tool for removing them that most of the time will not damage them.

 

Do you remember what the fasteners were called? Are they a rivet?

Ok, so mine are not factory. Unless they changed, mine look like big plastic rivets.  I'll see if I can get a picture of them. No wonder you guys are pointing me to Autozone and hardware stores. The push in fasteners like you posted are everywhere, as in easy to find. Mine are not. I have never seen anything like them before in automotive use, so that is why I asked.

After looking a bit closer, I have seen thees fasteners before. They press in, then the center pin pushes in and spreads the back side wider.

Here is a shot of them.

 

 

I'm thinking they are reusable if I can pull up on the pin. If not, no reason to not use the other kind mentioned...

  You don't need to remove those 4 plastic pop rivets.  They merely hold the soft part of the inner fender to the molded plastic part of it.  Fold the soft flaps towards the outer edge of the fender, then pull/roll it out of the way.  It will hang down out of the way and you can access the front bumper bolts & horns.

Yep...after 3-4X you get pretty good at it ;) .    The tough part is keeping track of the tow hook brackets.  There's a funky nut that goes in the frame stub just behind the alternator.  Keep close track of that...easy to lose if you forget it's not welded to the frame.
