misfitmechanic Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I was wondering if anybody knew if the rear brake components off a 86 mj dana 35 would work on a xj dana 44. My brakes on the new to me dana 44 are dickered, the backing plates have holes rotted through them. I'd rather use my decent brake components than buy new. Thanks for any info
HOrnbrod Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I'm pretty sure they will as the axle flange bolt pattern for the D44 and non-c-clip D35 is the same.
Eagle Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 What year is the XJ? Oops -- never mind. The D44s weren't c-clip in any year. Yes, the D35 brakes should work, but you will be limited to using the 1-3/4" D35 drums.
mnkyboy Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 You will have to open up the axle hole in the backing plate so the D44 axle bearing will clear.
misfitmechanic Posted February 21, 2013 Author Posted February 21, 2013 Thanks guys, looks like I got my weekends work cut out getting my axle installed and brakes swapped over.
airspeed Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 My Dana 44 has 2-1/2" x 10" shoes. I noticed a difference when I changed from the D35, especially how the E brake works!

Yes, but his Dana 44 backing plates are trashed, which is why he needs to swap. The wider drums will NOT work with the D35 backing plates.
