sinkrun
Does anyone know whats involved in putting a 98 4.0 engine in a 2001 xj. Whats the differances in electronics etc.
Backdraft
The 98 will have a distributor, the 01 will be coil on plug.
terrawombat
I did this exact swap on my '01XJ after spinning a rod bearing on the original engine. The swap is extremely easy IF you have an adapter plate to go from the larger intake/exhaust ports on the '98 engine to the smaller ports on the '01 two-piece cast manifold. Adapter plate can be seen here: Pull the dizzy out of the hole and drop the camshaft position sensor...just make sure it's set correctly and isn't 180 degrees out like I did the first time around  Some of the '98 sensors may have different connector plugs, so you'll need to steal the sensors from the '01 engine. sinkrun
IS the plate something you made or bought?

Sir Sam
why is this needed? When I went the other way, 01 engine into a 96, I just bolted up the 96 intake to the 0331 head.
terrawombat
The exhaust ports on the 00-01 header are so much smaller than the non-0331 exhaust ports that it won't completely cover them up.
Sir Sam
ah, copy that.
sinkrun
Sorry to bring up a old thread however it took this long to blow the 2000 XJ engine. I found a decent 96 can the above procedures be used with the 96?

JeepcoMJ
Thinking too hard. If your 01 has split manifolds, but no pre-cat, swap to the 98 exhaust manifold and y-pipe, using the 01 o2 sensor. problem solved.
