Yoke
Hello all just purchased a 1988 Jeep Comanche, and very excited about getting it up to speed. Now like most, mechanical and electrical don't scare me and I have slung a wrench more than once, but body work does  . The truck is in mechanically good shape but the body does need some work and I wanted to just clarify some things I have read in this forum. 1. Jeep Comanche = MJ 2. Jeep Cherokee = XJ 3. From the doors forward XJ = MJ 4. From the doors back your on yoru own? Does anyone produce rear quater panels? Tail Gates? Preferably in Canada or the Alberta arear? Oh and last but not least 2 wheel drive to 4x4 is it worth the effort? I'd only use it in the snow as I'm not into offroading. Rokhound
well welcome and as for going to 4x4 if you can find a cheap xj like for 2-400 then yeah.
razrwild
welcome to the board, I'm in the same boat as you except mine is already 4x4. Enjoy the truck and the work ahead
speed_racer
For your cause, only if you can find a good shifting 4 wheel drive xj, it won't be cost effective.. All you need though is a d30 front axle, 4wd transmission and transfer case, and a driveshaft, pretty much.... I'd say keep it 2wd, but a 2" spacer in the front, maybe shackle or AAL in the rear, get some 31's, and keep it 2wd... Mine is 2wd right now and has stock suspension and 31's and Ive been insane places....
comanche5L
if you get as much snow we usually do, id opt for the 4wd conversion, you are gonna need it, and apriciate it when you get a big snowfall. no comparison between 2wd and 4wd in the snow. comancheon33
I just got an 88 MJ 2.5 4 speed 2wd that I am converting to a 5 speed 4x4. After all snow we have had this year 2wd is worthless. This thing gets stuck on the slightest of an incline. Just need to finish rounding up parts.
JeepcoMJ
like rokhound said...find a complete cherokee and convert it with that. even if you have to spend a day at the junkyard, get all the parts you need. it'll make it that much easier if you get it all from 1 vehicle. Yoke
Thanks for the replies guys... the previous owner had a ton of bricks this winter to maintain traction in the snow so I'm thinking of the 4x4 route and I am waiting to hear about a 4x4 cherokee real cheap ;) I'll try to get pics up. Rokhound
One thing to add.........is if it is a five speed you might as well up grade to the AX15 plus make sure you get the t-case to match because of the output shafts are different.
Pete M
Don't forget that your front and rear gear ratios need to match.
