Is This Worth It?

I have been looking for a new Comanche for awhile now and I think I found exactly what I'm looking for, except the price.

The basics

It's a 1988 Comanche long bed

4x4 with 4.0l and automatic trans

Grey exterior with grey interior.

170,000 miles

The good

Interior seems to be a good shape

The body has little rust on it and none above the rear tires like most.

Rocker panels are solid

Floors are solid

It's been under coated

It's got what looks to be a factory long bed mat.

Newer tires

It's got a front grille guard.

And finally a camper shell

The bad

It's been repainted which means it could be hiding something

The one side of the bed seems to have alot of bondo on it.

The camper shell doesn't match the rest of the jeep

Not a factory rear bumper

Front factory fog lights are missing

No emblems at all on it

Whoever painted it painted over the plastic flares and the paint is chipping off.

And whoever painted the rims only painted 3 of them.

It's seems like the truck has been decently taken care of. It does have alittle rust but I'm not too worried about it because I'm going to be using it mainly as a winter truck as soon as my other MJ is done with its restoration. It is a 4x4 which is what I want for the winter and it has some rust/body work so I won't feel bad when the salt starts eating away at it. The price says $2800 but I think if I talk to him I might be able to drop the price. I still think that $2800 is steep for it but the sign in the window says alot of extra parts. My dad says that I could buy a really nice MJ down south for that price but I don't want to ruin a good truck.

Ill try to post some pictures when I get home as I'm posting this from my phone.

2800? ya that does sound pretty pricey, I am curious as to what all the "extra" parts are. If you havent even gone to look/drive it go do that first, post some pictures and then we'll see. Usually a lot of bondo means either A. its dented, accident? or B. Underlying rust

your list of bad arent really bad things, bad things would be severe rust, runs rough, shot transmission, shredded interior, stuff like that

Don't know how far you can talk him down, but with likely rust issues hiding under the paint/bondo and being 24 years old. I would think it is worth barely half of that.

Then again, my daughter drove Wilbur to school one day week before last, and it looks every bit as beat up as it actually is. Class mate offer $3000 for it out of the blue. She just laughed at him, saying the tires alone cost half of that.

Then again, if I were willing to sell it, I would take that offer in a heartbeat. Maybe they have gotten to be worth more than I realized.

The interior isn't shredded but it is missing a headliner. Normal wear and tear on it I guess. I'm going later on to look at the truck and hopefully I will be able to hear it run at least. Like I said there is bondo on the bed. And you can clearly see the body work on it, even from the pictures I've taken. From what I can tell the bondo goes from the lower portion of the front of the bed (by the cab corner) all the way to were the rear flares start. Hopefully I will be able to post pictures of the truck soon.

Ooou, thats nice. And actually i can't see the body work, it looks really good. I would lose the topper though, but thats just me. Gota say i dig that rear bumper. Before you make an offer see if its got the D44, if it does i would go for it and offer him 2k, it looks like it would make a really nice truck.

If it doesnt have the D44, and hes not willing to dramatically lower his price, 1700 maybe? Then i would probably pass, what hes asking is just to much.

I paid a 1k for mine,

90 eliminator,

good 4x4,

good 5spd,

good interior,

some rust,

bed liner,

good motor, with a 145,000 miles,

a/c needed charge,

windows didnt work,

If it makes you feel any better, I shelled out $2700 for mine... more than I should have imo but I only had about a week to get a legal car on the road, so I was a little hasty about the whole thing. Mine's got 120k miles more than that, and came with zero extra parts (except a handful of fuses) and a mismatched set of well-worn tires. Not having seen that one in person or mine clean (po didn't expect to part with it as soon as he did, heheh) I'm going to say that that one looks a lot nicer.

Eh, that's big money. For me, I would rather see an MJ in original tattered war paint with some age than new shiny paint. Who knows what else could be hiding under that paint. If the bondo/filler is this easy to see now, just wait until that paint gets some seasons under it's belt and starts showing it's true colors in HD.

i did check and is does have the 35 under the rear. it also has a radio (with cassette) and a/c. I'm still alittle worried about what could be hiding under that paint. it could be nothing, or it could be something really bad. i was suppossed to go look at it and talk to the owner yesterday but due to the weather i didnt feel the need to venture out and stand in the rain. i also did find a few more candidates in my search for my next truck. I'm really not looking for much of a project and all the ones around me seem to be only 2wd and need a ton of work. Plus my dad doesnt want some rusted out POS sitting in the driveway. I'm waiting on some pictures that i emailed a guy about for a 1988 comanche chief but when i showed my dad he was alittle bit more than dissinterested. I did find a VERY clean 1986 comanche x down south for the same price at the one up here in north east ohio, its just getting rid of a few cars so i can have to cash to play with.
