Alexia
essentially besides the obvious fact of a motor and tranny what do i need to convert my 2.8 comanche to a 4.0 ive heard core support do i need a new radiator. checklist please. Basically everything under the hood is needed. Also, you will have to get creative with hammering and modifiying the firewall to fit the larger 4.0L engine. If you are not into having to modify the firewall there is the option of swapping a 3.4L engine from a Camaro. http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Project_XJ/Project_XJ.htm
Naterenfo1
Buy a junked/rolled XJ, remove all engine components, and electrical components from your 86 including your wiring harness. The firewall on your truck might work, and it might not its a crapshoot. If not, Apply sledgehammer directly to center of firewall. Repeat until appropriate clearance is achieved. the radiator support in the front will have to be removed and the one from your junk XJ can probably be used if its not toast! Thats the best I have figured out so far... Search "Project Damien" for more info! I believe Drachir459 has a write up going for it :MJ 1:
my86mj
well here is the thing I'm not using fuel injection I'm rigging up a carb setup from a 258 (preference) however I'm not above hammering. the biggest deal is the radiator setup i might order an entire front end conversion from 97+. I'm avoiding the v6 option because i want to run a strong trans and bigger tires in the near future.
mnkyboy
You can adapt the 3.4l to an AX15 so a stronger transmission isn't an issue. I've seen XJ based rock race buggies running the 3.4l IMO converting to a carbed 4.0L is waste of time, for what is involed you would be way ahead just swapping in a v8. my86mj
i don't want heavy modification or i would get a 327 without a second though
