Pete M
it's always a good strength upgrade  , but isn't really needed in an MJ until 6+, and even then some guys don't have them. we have a much longer wheelbase than wranglers and cherokees and so we don't suffer the sharp driveline angles that they do. but you will want a longer driveshaft at 4+. unless you upgrade the rear axle (which I highly recommend if you want big tires), which the new axle will have a longer snout on it and so balance out the height. what are you doing for gears and axles? oh, and welcome to the club! :waving:
swirlytwirlys
i have a 8.25 right now.... i would like to go 5.5" or 6.5" of lift long arm. i would def upgrade my axle to a 8.8 and def regear depending on which tire size i go with 33's or 35's my brother wants me to put the 6.5" on with 35's since i got the truck cheap and is not my daily driver what options do i have with the rear driveshat? as far as junkyards or is that not a option??? thanks for ur input new to the comanche world... Pete M
fwiw, 33s are less of a headache and only lose 1" of ground clearance vs 35s. I don't know of any junkyard options to gain an inch on 4.0/stick rear driveshaft. :dunno:
swirlytwirlys
so if i put a 5.5" lift on with 33 i wouldnt have to put a sye on?
mvusse
I have roughly 8" of lift in the rear of my lwb. I'm not anywhere near needing a SYE yet. Also, if that 8.25" has 29 spline axle shafts, I wouldn't bother upgrading to an 8.8. I run a 29 spline 8.25" with 35" tires, and for the last year and a half with a lunch box locker. Even doing a rear wheelstand while the axle was hopping didn't damage it. It did break my driveshaft, though  AFAIK, Iron Rock Offroad does not make anything Comanche specific, so I'm guessing you're getting the Cherokee kit. All the front stuff will work, the rear will not. Instead, do a SOA swap in the rear. The back will probably sit a bit higher than the front, but that all depends on how badly your leaf springs have sagged over the years and how tall the 5.5 front spring really are. Most people pair up a rear SOA with 6.5" front lift. You will need a longer rear driveshaft.,
swirlytwirlys
ok yeah i talked to the guys from iron rock offroad and they told me they can take the springs out and cut the price..... the 8.25 i have is out of a 2001 cherokee havent pulled it apart yet to see what splines it has.... this is at least what the guy i bought it from told me..... Gibby
I had the doesch techs on my xj and loved them. Built in bump stops on the shocks. The ones I had were set up for 4" of up travel and 14" of down travel if I remember correctly.
Pete M
the more you spend on shocks, the better they are.
