Auto Trans swap help.

Recommended Posts

I have owned my 5 speed Jeep MJ for over a year know and I still can't get use to the clutch in 1st gear.

I stalled out so many times today in a 3 mile line on a hill trying not to roll back on to the car behind me. And I think I need a new clutch also.. I am just getting tired of this.

I can drive any other manual transmission except this one...

So my question is... Can somebody "make me a parts list" to do a complete Auto Trans Swap?

My jeep is the 1990 Eliminator 4x4 with the dana 35.

And just another curious question... If I did the 4BT swap, could I use the stock Auto Jeep Transmission with the 4BT engine?

Thx.

Well anything CAN be done. So I'm sure you could get the jeep trans behind the 4bt (adaptor plate), but id doubt it would live long at all.

The 4bt came with a TH400 behind it. Which is just peachy so its best to use that the way it came.

As for your MT woes.. you must have a bad motor mount of something is wrong.

Cause my jeep is like taking off in an automatic cadillac.

Maybe you can do a vid of what its doing? or a detailed description?

With pricing being so good on these vehicles, you could prob either trade your MJ to someone who wants a manual here on the forums, or buy another MJ thats an auto and then have both.

But id rather help you sort the issue your having than send you down the not so cheap road of auto conversion. :dunno:

My clutch is like driving with a stage 2 or 3 clutch. Its on or off so you can't slip it into 1st. If you try to do that, its shakes alittle not alot. Its really ez to spin tires with this clutch.

I'm expecting this to be over $1500 swap. I'm willing to buy everything new.

I have a garage available for my use with everything except for a lift. But getting a lift soon.

I just need a list because I don't know anything behind auto trans.

I have owned 3 vehicles so far and they are all manual. I have 7 vehicles in my driveway right now and none of then are auto.

I guess my family is racist against auto trans lol.

You just need a new clutch dude. Either has oil on the friction lining or its been overheated.

If you pull it all out, check flywheel and either replace or have someone with a brain and a rock table surface it, then replace the rest. Your issue will be gone. for WAYHAY less than 1500 bucks. You could buy an entire automatic manche for that much.

well then go forth. Pop out the gear grinder and put in a slush box. :)

I want auto in my manch too, cause i plan on crawlin. But its too much a pain, and mine is too minty to mess up. So I'm hunting either an auto chero or another manch thats auto.

Then i can jack that all up and exocage it and not care when i tumble it in moab..lol.

Thats my 2nd reason why I want auto. Crawling!

I can fit 33" tires right now with no lift lol. And I have a 6" lift, itching to get installed.

I want to end up with dana 44 or something that can handle 37" maybe 40"?

D44 front has the same u joints as a D30. Neapco Bruteforce, Duralast Gold, Spicer 5-297x, Spicer 5-760x and the Alloy USA chromoly ones do not survive long under my truck running 35s (although the Alloy USA and the 5-760x ones do better than most).

37s and definitely 40s are going to need something with larger joints, unless you spent $300 each on CTM ones and get chromoly shafts to put them in.

List:

AW4 including::

AW4 torque converter

AW4 flexplate

AW4 TCU & harnesss

Compatible Transfer Case

Compatible bell housing

Shifter

Shifter plate

Shifter bracket

Shifter Bezel

Shifter cable.

TV cable

Park/lock cable

2" longer front shaft

2" shorter rear shaft

That's the short list. If you can find a 100% donor, great. Otherwise it's alot of money in the new parts or trolling the junkyards.

I know this doesnt help much, but I'm just thinking out loud.

These last post confirm my path easily.

there are no less than 10 jeeps i can buy right now for around 1k that are auto 4x4.

Aint no way i would do all this work to a jeep to convert it when i could buy another one that came that way. lol.

I already have 2 MJs and 1 TJ crawler. I don't need another one besides a donor XJ.

...and I agree on the AMOUNT of work. I have completed this swap working outside on my "floor" of three sheets of plywood over the gravel driveway, in the sun, after work. I've also sweated my arse off in the junkyard pulling parts an fighting with spiders and mosquitoes.

I would NOT do it again, this way. I'm 59 and getting up and down 40 times a day isn't as easy as it used to be

  • 6 years later...

I was Thinking about this conversion myself.I own a 1987 Comanche PU.I also have a 1999 grand wagoner for most parts.I'm also 59,and it sounds like alot of work to get finished.Even though I have a doner.I think I'll still be looking for a bunch of parts.My 5 speed is shot so its not a great loss.I also have an 88 XJ,but not willing to rob Paul to make Peter go down the road.The easyer salution would probably be to take all the 6" lift parts off the truck,and reinstall on the wagon.My only problem is the wagon will never be a PU.Any other help on the conversion or ideas would help.Thanks

Some other help would be can I even use the trans & transfer case out of the 1999 grand wagoner in my 88 Comanche ? I'm sure there"s connections that would have to change.Is it capable of matting with the Renix ? Any help ?  This swap is going to have to be done sooner or later.Driving to work in 3 out of 5 speeds is getting really old here.

Thats what it said on the title.I think they call them a YJ. It has a high performance version 4.0 or 4.2 not sure haven't ran the numbers yet. The trans not sure which version,but its an auto.I do know the transfer case has the same shift pattern as my XJ,and my Comanche PU. The transfer case has a different rear nose than both the others its really short,and has an electrical hook up.Both the others don't have.

The '99 Grand Cherokee was the WJ. If it's a 6-cylinder it would be the 4.0L engine. I don't remember if they offered the CommandTrac (231) transfer case in the WJ -- I thought all the 6-cylinder WJs came with the SelecTrac (242) t-case. Either way, they have the sealed output on the transfer case. It's more prone to vibration and VERY intolerant of lifts, but it has the advantage that when the driveshaft is removed, the transfer case lube doesn't all drain out.

Thats Good to know YJ,ZJ,WJ,XJ Its alittle confusing.Wagoneer's were wagoneers or J10's A Cj5 was a the shorter brother of the CJ7.Right now I have 1XJ a Comanche (which I assume is an XJ  too) 2 WJ's one is the V8 version one the 4.0 (parts car).I also have a 79 Wagoneer ( AMC 360 TH 400),and a 78 ford Currier with early JEEP running gear converted in ( SBD CA) back in the late 70's early 80'S.I'm also looking at the Ford for parts. It has the Dana 34 front,Ford 8 3/4 rear,and the T case is the two stick version separated from the trans by its own driveshaft.This was just a thought,because the 2 wheel drive trans for the XJ is hard to find around here.Then the down time,and extra cost of having driveshafts made.It didn't seem to practical.Thanks for the help Eagle.Now I'm just wondering if  the trans in the  4.0 WJ can be used in my Comanche,and if I can swap the newer T case for the better 231?

This is starting to sound like alot of work.

Its starting to sound like keeping the 5 speed,and maybe a motor swap would be the easier way to go.The WJ's 4.0 I'm sure will fit in either one just have to change alot of small parts.Sensor's,and injectors mostly.Just replace the 5 speed with one that works lol.

The Comanche is an MJ.

TJ = 1997-2006 Wrangler

WJ =1999-2004 Grand Cherokee

XJ = 1983-2001 Cherokee

YJ = 1985-1995 Wrangler

ZJ = 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee

There's others but no need to confuse you. Google's your friend.

The WJ trans would probably bolt onto your MJ's 4.0, and then you'd have to make your own mount for the crossmember. The tough part would be getting the computer controls to work. If there's a standalone computer running it that wouldn't be too difficult, but if it's built into the ecu, then it gets more difficult. It's not the same automatic from the MJ/XJ platform so you won't be able to run it off XJ computers, either.

Your "least work" option is going to be finding another transmission (out of an XJ) or having the one you already have rebuilt.

It would be easier,and cheaper to just rebuild or replace what I have. This I'm sue of,but were"s the fun in that? I wish I could just find a 2wd auto trans.Working,and cheap would be a plus. I'd use the Tcase out of the ford in a heartbeat.Strong enough,and it has a PTO option.Build a mount put it out of the way throw a skidplate under it.Measure 3 drive driveshafts,and have them built.New CPU,and the cord to control the trans. Done,better,and stronger than the stock units.The only problems are can't find a trans,and the nearest driveshaft shop is about 4 hours drive from me. lol
