Squeaking

Recommended Posts

Any ideas where the darn squeaking is coming from? I just changed my fan clutch and will be changing my water pump sometime this week. I gave all the pulleys a nice bath in WD40 and I loosened my belt to see if that would help, but nothing. :wrench:

that's an odd one.

when you stepped on the gas it went from a light squek squek heavy squeak to heavy heavy heavy.

So it sounds like a shaft is moving when you step on the gas. check the alternator bearings.

Alternatively, get yourself a large section of rubber hose and use it like a stethoscope, just be very careful not to get it into the belt/fan while the motor is running.

Sounds like you may have some bad bearings in a pulley or two. Remove the belt and check each one for smooth rotational movement and any side to side or in and out play.

This is what I would do.... I would think it was the Alt OR the idler/tentioner pulley. (If yours has one. ;) )

Also WD40 is a SUCKY lubricator!! It works good for removing crayon marks from the wall and displacing water under your dist cap, but thats about it!! Keep it OFF the belts!! When youa all done, I would replace that belt. Its likely, at least PART of your noise.

GOOD LUCK,

CW

:agree: Pull your belt off and spin the pulleys by hand.

I did. Nothing seems worn or making any noise. The alternator only has 25 miles on it. :hmm:

I think it may be my water pump, at least thats where the sqeaking seems to be coming from, it's too hard to tell.

I ran her without the belt and no squeaking. I took my alternator to the autoparts store to have it checked and no squeaking. So while I was there I went ahead and ordered some new pulley's. Should have those on tomorrow.

Ok, new pulley's are on and still the same damn sqeaking! :headpop:

The only things left would be the water pump, the power steering pump, or the bearing behind the cooling fan pulley.

How do I change the bearing behind the fan??

Same stupid squeaking with the new parts. I will be putting the new water pump on this weekend, hopefully that will help?

OK,

How about trying something strange....Rig up something to spin these items individually. you will need something to use as a belt. A Drill motor with something "chucked up" to run the make shift belt on.

You will be able to spin everything sans the bottom pulley. That one can be spun by simply starting the jeep. (don't run it too long....)

I keep thinking your noise is belt related.....I didnt see you say you changed the belt itself. The one you have on there "LOOKS" good, but still could be causing this noise.

If cash is really tight, you could buy it, put it on. then run it long enough to rule out or in the belt. If its NOT the belt. Remove it and return. No harm no foul as its perfectly good for the next guy. but then you will have ruled OUT the belt itself as the culprit.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I listened to both sound clips and it seems to be better, no?

Is the water pump known to be bad? If so it could cause such a problem.

What all pulleys were replaced?

It's not bad, it is just a suspect for the squeaking noise. I already have a new one, so it can't hurt to change it. The only problem is that I have never changed one before or messed with the closed coolant system. I don't have a clue what to do first. :wrench:

John, drain the rad. first. take the cap off the cooolant bottle, then drain the radiator...the drain is on the right hand SIDE of the radiator...you have to pull the front of the fender well back and reach up to it i think, then drain. it's simple. don't get your hoses mixed up when taking them off..and make sure you catch your antifreeze and don't let it get everywhere. don't reuse the antifreeze unless you intend to strain it before putting it back in.

p.s. let me know how those parts you got from me work for ya!

I was thinking about you and this thread today as I was swapping out my alt. It $#!& the bed last night!!

Luckly I have a spare or two!! :D :brows:

It wasnt marked for output. The one in th MJ, that went bad is a replacement. I do not have AC so I am assuming it is a smaller unit. the one I swapped in was from a XJ limited with power everything as well as AC. So I am going to assume it is of a higher output.
