5 hours to change my water pump?!? Oof.

Just thought Id vent. 5 hours today to change the water pump. The Power steering pump has to come completely off as well as the mounting bracket for the power steering pump, as the last bolt for the PS bracket is dead center behind the pump. Ugh.

On top of that, jeep redesigned the casting on the water pump to use longer bolts. Something I did not realize till almost 8:00pm. (auto parts stores closed!) The bolts I had were useless. Still not done.....

do it a few more times and you'll have it down to about 45mins total. ask me how I can do that. :shake: same as tranny swaps, piece of cake now, about 1.5hrs. :yes: its a jeep and for as long as you own one it will make you become an expert. :wrench:

For the life of me, I could not get in to get the back bolts out of the power steering pump to remove the bracket. Also, all the bolts were pretty rusted up. This is the original OE water pump. I also do not have small hands. I did take a small break. Dunno. It just took a long time. All fixed now. I had to replace both radiator hoses also, and can see the thermostat hoses are going to be next.

Lex did you remove the front end? You can pull the grill and its support in a bout 5 mins. Then you can take the radiator stay off in under a minute and move rad and condenser to the side quite far. Then everything is way easy to do. :D

Swaps a water pump out in less than 10 minutes. Use a sledge hammer and chisel to remove the old pump. Clean old gasket material from mating surface. Hold new pump in position. take a roll of duct 6tape and wrap it around the pump and engine block. Voila! done. Now if I could just get the dern thing to quit leaking. :nuts:

Yep. I'm actually looking in to a steam cleaning. The PO let the valve cover leak for an extreme amount of time. (there is at least a 1/4 inch of buildup all over the block.) I did power wash it once with some engine brite, and some of the crud came off, but Id like to get it really cleaned up so I can see what else might be leaking.
