87Warrior
Well, can you surface a 2.5L flywheel? I was reading through the 2.5L section of the FSM again and noticed it mentioned checking the flywheel with a straight edge. If not, what is the best way to clean it up? AMCJeepMJ
When I did my clutch last year, I took my flywheel down to the local Napa machine shop for just that.
xjrev10
Yes. On a 4.0 you cannot.
cruiser54
IIRC, we turned the flywheels on 4.0s at least up through 1992 when I left. I have heard that you can't do it on the LATE 4.0s.
87Warrior
$30 later my 2.5 fltwheel looks new again. Now to press in that pilot bearing. Thanks for the info guys. :jump:

The FSM for my '88 4.0L Cherokee specifically says not to turn the flywheel.

If they where machined flat, obviously the bevel is no more. Sounds like it will 'work' just eat the clutch disk up faster and will not operate like it should. cruiser54
I thought on the later ones that the throwout bearing/slave didn't have enough throw in them to push the clutch if material had been removed from the flywheel.
Eagle
The FSM for my '88 4.0L Cherokee specifically says not to turn the flywheel. Really? Does it say why? We sure turned a bunch of them. It says something about a special contour, but it doesn't say what that contour is. The consensus is that it's slightly dished. I only know of a few people from NAXJA who have had the flywheel turned, and they all had problems.
cruiser54
I guess we dodged a few bullets then....
