ScrapHybrid
Ok so I have a 89 2.5 tbi and was wondering if you guys can help me out here. The problem is the TPS is malfuctioning and I have it disconnected and the car is still running go figure. The truck just got a years insurance put on it and I was wondering if I could just simply reprogam the computer so it is optimised with out the senser attached. I'm a little confused here about all the types of memory and there involvement with the diffrent types of driving conditions. I do know what open loop and closed loop is and I know we are talking about closed loop here. One of the problem is high idle but I'm pretty sure that it is because of the old programing. So anybody want to give me a helping hand here, thanks.
Eagle
An '89 is a Renix computer, and those cannot be reflashed. High idle is usually caused by the idle air controller on the throttle body.
Pete M
or a vacuum leak.
Jeep Driver
Yeah you got another problem and it ain't your computer. Cruser54 continues to rant on about going through your wiring and sensors..............and falls to deaf ears. You need to go through your entire electric system and clean it up. In my opinion you cannot piece meal this........band-aid over band-aid over band-aid and you are wasting your time. Check all your wires, connections, grounds, sensors. Your TPS is there for a reason.

Eagle
I do know what open loop and closed loop is and I know we are talking about closed loop here. You may NOT be talking about closed loop, if you disconnected the TPS. The ECU requires input from several different sensors to properly control the air-fuel mix and the ignition timing. If you disconnect one of the required sensors, I suspect the ECU may just default to open loop mode -- which will run, but it's overly rich and your gas mileage will suck. Open loop is intended only for warm-up.
cruiser54
Eagle is on the mark here about closed vs open loop. OP's high idle is more than likely caused by the bad TPS or bad grounds in the sensor circuit. How was it determined the TPS is bad? What tests were done? ScrapHybrid
All right guys I'll look into getting a new tps because I don't want to burn up a cat or do any damage to the engine. Also off idle performence sucks when gas is matted which could be a problem in an emergency.
ScrapHybrid
Well the engine was stalling so I tested all the things that would likely cause an engine to completey shutdown not just cause it to missfire. I could not back prob the tps because of my limited tools so i just disconnected it and fire up the engine and it ran better ever since. The funny thing is the sensor is relatively new because the wires are all new and no oil or dirst on them so i'm worried the problem might be farther back and a new sensor will just get eaten up again.
