Twisty Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 the MJ started and ran fine yesterday. i put a muffler on after the cat today, and i tried to start it today and it ran, then it sputtered then it stopped. i started it, sputtered stalled. tried again and it would only crank. i unplugged the CPS, sprayed some cleaner in there (this is what was wrong last time) and nothing. i checked that little fitting on the fuel rail, and there was no fuel in there. when i turn the key, i can hear the fuel pump running in the tank for 2 seconds like its supposed to. ~1.5 gallons of gas was added to the tank today to see if that was the problem...still won't start. can a line be frozen? we put some dry gas in the tank at around 1, and it still won't start. any ideas of what i can try? one thing i did do was unplug the 4 vaccume lines coming off of the TC that goes to the disco axle...i don't think that this is the problem though. thx.

ridergoatee Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Might not be your prob,but i was having startin difficulties off and on for a while. Finally found the culprit,though i could hear my fuel pump kickin on like it was supposed to,i pulled it anyway.Lo and behold,the ground wire on the assembly itself was slightly frayed.Replaced it with new and walla,problem solved.Not sayin that is your prob,but does spark the idea of possibly a weak fuel pump? :chillin:
CWLONGSHOT Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Your on the right track... NO FUEL= PROBLEM!! Now to figure out why.... Start with the fuel and line...trace the line and get new/known good fuel in there. Put in new filter. While its off, blow threw line to engine to see if clear. CW
87manche Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 if you suspect an ice blockage it's time to get the wif'es hair dryer, unbless you have a heated garage to push it into. Drygas won't do much in the tank if a line is frozen.

Correction, DryGas won't do ANYTHING if the line is already frozen. DryGas isn't even fuel system anti-freeze. All it is, basically, is alcohol. It most certainly isn't fuel system defroster.

BTW -- have you plugged these lines (or the ports) yet? If not, you created a vacuum leak. I don't think it's the only problem, but it isn't helping any if you're trying to diagnose a no-start condition when you have a built-in, known vacuum leak.
Twisty Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 well i did what CW said, and worked back to the the fuel filter (i think its the filter...its about 1/2 the size of a 12oz coke can, and is back behind the cab). i took that off, and took the line off of the fuel rail, and blew through it. gas shot out indicating its clear. i blew through the filter, and gas shot out of that...its not the clog. i tried to blow into the line going into the tank, and i couldnt...now i don't know if thats the pump causing that blockage. i tried adding more gas to the tank (2-3gallons) and cranking the truck hoping to get some gas to come out of the line where the filter is usualy plugged into, but i didnt. i think that the clog is in there somewhere. is it ok to blow compressed air into the line...or will it kill the pump?

ridergoatee Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 It would be a good time to try blow dryer if he already has line disconnected from fuel filter back to tank. Then try just cycling the pump again before pullin the pump.

Twisty Posted February 18, 2007 Author Posted February 18, 2007 DOH. still won't start. i fixed the no fuel in the rail problem, but my battery had no more juice to crank the starter. i charged it, and i still get a clicking sound. tried the batt on the XJ and it worked fine (started and all). ive tried jumping the solenoid on the starter...click. i replaced the starter relay (next to the battery), out of my 1990 XJ, and click. i tried hitting the starter with a hammer many times...click. I'm getting annoyed, and frusterated. any other ideas?
