project88mj
i want to do this cause the v8 is so much easyer to work on and get parts for so on and so forth so do you guys think it would be able to work?
jared
people put 305/350 engine in cherokees and manches all the time, i would rather have the 350 tho.
Pete M
I wouldn't say "all the time", but it has been done before and there are a few guys here that run a v8. Some love it and have no regrets, others would never ever do it again, and others never get all the bugs worked out and eventually just sell off the truck to get rid of it. Be prepared to kiss your drivetrain goodbye. Be prepared to fight to keep the beast cool. And be prepared to either fabricate your own brackets, mounts etc. or pay out the butt to advanceadapters.com for the parts you need. It is not for the feint of heart. Eagle
Your major problem will be cooling. Did I mention "MAJOR" problem? Personally, I'd do an AMC 360 to keep it all in the family if I were to do it at all, but I'm really more interested in a stroker version of the 4.0L. I can't believe anyone would claim a V-8 is "easier to work on" than an I-6.

I have a Nash 327 with TH400 and Quadratrac I thought about putting into the '86 Longbox (too many other projects) Also thought it would be super cool to do a 304 punched with 4.0L pistons and LPG. (with a 727/NP208J combo to keep it all Jeep!)

Muahhahha! It's amazing people think that way when there is a TON of aftermarket stuff for AMC motors. I have a 4.6L AMC 6 stroker pushing 300 hp and 350 ft lbs of torque to put into my rig with almost stock other stuff. (mixing and matching tcases, axles etc to handle the power)
MJchick
Hey carnuck could you give me an idea of where to find AMC parts? We have a rebiult 304 but the guy went and put all the old crap back on it.I keep telling my husband we should put the motor in the TJ to get rid of that under powered 4cyl but he says it's to hard to get parts for the AMC now since they quit making it. carnuck
http://zmjeeps.com for a Chev HEI conversion for AMC V8s. (I'm doing the 6 cyl HEI swap for my '82 AMC Spirit) Edelbrock makes aluminum heads, intake and EFI for AMC V8s now (more for racing than offroading and NOT for fuel economy! ) I like the 2 bbl or an SP2P 4 bbl with TBI from a GM on 304s (I run the 2100 Motorcraft on my '73 J4000 and haul 6500 lb payloads) It depends on what you want for it. I would run the 4.0 before doing a V8 conversion. I have a 4.6L stroker awaiting assembly to go into my truck. Then I can unleash all 300 ponies under the hood! :redneck:
feerocknok
Yes, it's possible. Carbed small blocks are the simplest engine I've ever touched. However, if you're going to do a small block Chevy swap, don't do a 305. Do at least a 350, or try to get your hands on a 400. Identical engine, but different bore and stroke, and more likely to be a 4 bolt main instead of a 2 bolt. I'd say find a donor Chevy and take the motor, trans, t-case, and axles, and transplant em. The whole thing may or may not be worth it to you. Completely depends on your feelings for your particular truck and how many headaches you care to take on. Duner
The 305 is a decent choice for the comanche but you have to be sure about how you are going to use the vehicle when your finished. We have a 305 available and already chatted with the advanced adapters people about the swap. 305 chev is not to powerful so the drivetrain will survive for a while. be ready to replace ujoints, driveshafts and trannys on a regular basis and then there is the cost of the conversion kit. It was easy for my dad and I to evaluvate our solution after spending 15 min with the advance adapters guy. 1.) This is my truck and it has to get me around to school and work as well as survive the offroad abuse. 2) This is texas and the vehicle needs a/c 3.) we have enough projects at this moment as my dad has decided that we will enter a jeepspeed vehicle in the baja 1000 in november. Solution will be a stroker crank, camshaft and header combined with the existing easily tuneable renix injection already on my mj. This way everything remains jeep and we don't create any new problems except for rear tire wear. I would really like the sound of the v8 but my dad has conviced me that the daily driver is not the vehicle for that project. So the question is what will your MJ be used for?
