Retiring the Monte

As much as I hate to do it, once I graduate I will be getting rid of my 1998 monte carlo. It was my first car, worked my @$$ off to buy. Well now it has 200k miles on it and really starting to show it.

So now the real topic. Any ideas on a new vehicle? Well new to me atleast? I've been looking at s10 blazers and cherokees, and the occasional VW. My budget will most likely be in the 5,000 area(granted I get a job as soon as I move home in march). Any other good ideas? Looking for something with 4 doors, as the only real downfall of the monte was it was a 2 door, and only had one stinkin cup holder!

(BTW: I refuse to purchase a Ford)

Well, its silly to refuse to buy a Ford. My best cars have been Fords and Jeeps. And I've owned just about every make of American car.

But if that's your opinion, I'd recommend a Jeep. You want a 4 door, so I'd say an XJ or a Grand.

Always fun getting a newer car. Good Luck!

You sir, have an excellent taste in vehicles

My vote is for a newer 4 door cherokee (97+) or a grand cherokee, grand cherokees in my opinion have a far better interior, and the v8 is pretty snappy!

4 door sedan? 5 grand? Cupholders? Lots of options. These are going to be about 10 or 15 years old, but...

3 series BMW

Subaru Impreza

Volvo S60

Grand Prix GTP

Jaguar XJ

MB C220/230/280

Lexus LS series

Nissan Maxima

or... get what you like and suits your needs. You know better than what we do of what you expect in a sedan.

Happy hunting!

I have never been a fan of GM cars. Finally got rid of the POS 04 Grand AM SHE had in the driveway.

Traded it in for a 04 Jeep Liberty. I would look into a 98-01 XJ. You can get a extremely nice one for 5gs. But you can also pay half or a quarter of that and still have nice one that may need a little :wrench:

Yea I think the XJ will be my best bet. I was looking at a few s10's but they want way to much for the low mileage ones. I want to buy one with under 100k miles. I've owned 3 vehicles now and none under 140k miles, most was my 82 jetta diesel with 242k. Loved that little thing, but love the MJ I traded it for even more!

Keep in mind the 00-01 XJ got the 0331 head that WILL crack. Not a question of if, but when.

97-99 are easily the best years. Be patient, and look in rust-free areas of the country. statewidelist.com is a good resource.

I picked up a 98 XJ with 118k miles for $1,900 +$90 for flight and $200 in gas. I could not touch anything local in similar condition for less than DOUBLE that cost.

Thanks for the tip! Living in the rustbelt makes it awefull hard to find something with even just a little bit of rust!

Yep. Lived in Denver my whole life, moved to Indy last Aug. Bought the XJ last week out of Denver and am driving it back this weekend.

I've got family in Louisville... somewhat similar in KY, but not nearly as bad as Indy.
