New Van Halen single: Tattoo

Now, don't get me wrong- I enjoy Van Halen; both the DLR and Van Hagar versions of it. I have listened to them for a long time, and still have Diver Down on vinyl and 1984 on cassette... somewhere... but I digress.

Having heard a half-dozen times now on the radio the new single off their album [record? cd? release?] due to be released in February, 'Tattoo', I must say the DLR-esque Van Halen I love are definitely past their prime. The music is repetitive and sounds tired; lyrics are uninspiring. The vim and vigor of 30 years ago seems to have petered out. EVH may be competent but he just doesn't stand out like in decades past.

With that said, I am still waiting for more music from the new album to be released and receive airplay to either give them a green check-mark of approval or the buzzing red Family Feud 'X'. I really hope the next single is better.

Anyone else disappointed and long for the days of I'm the One, Unchained, and Hot for Teacher?

Van Halen is definitely my favorite band of all time (both versions), and yes, both my girlfriend and I have heard and seen the video for Tattoo.

Is it a bad song? By any stretch of the term, no, it isn't. In fact, I think it's a pretty catchy tune.

Do I think that their new album is going to shake the foundation of the music industry when it's dropped next month? Definitely, DEFINITELY not. Everyone knows that VH is past their prime, but most everyone feels that VH III didn't live up to everyone's expectations, and after the 2004 tour with Hagar, VH was craping out on all the fans. So, I say the fans should be glad that any kind of album with a "sensible" Eddie V. playing on it with Roth on vocals is getting released.

Besides, even if you don't like the new album, what's stopping you from putting in 1984 or Fair Warning in the truck and driving? comanche.gif
