So, went out to warm up the DD today... Yes, the 89~ XJ... It's maybe a couple (or 10) degrees below zero, nothing new or amazing...

 

 

Put the key in, turn the ignition to run, electrical comes on... then goes off. Nothing, nadda. Turn to start, nothing, nadda... Turn the key back and forth, check some fuses, then go and get a ride into town (had to be at school).

 

 

Get back home and figure I had better figure out what's up. Throw the key in and turn it to run, nothing. Turn it to start and realize that my gauges jump slightly, and the temperature gauge climbs like it would normally with the key in the start position. Wiggle the key a bit, try again, gauges jump the same way...

 

 

Check the fuses, the battery, nothing is wrong? Go put the key back in and turn it to run, go to check the fuses again... And *whirr* the blower comes on, then the stereo beeps to life... Turn the key to start, it cranks and starts.

 

 

 

So, long story short what the hell is wrong? I used to this thing being quirky, but it never did this before...

battery problems cause of the bad weather?

 

assuming u are a true canadian and 10 below is in celsius (sp?), doesnt a batter have a tendacy to kinda freeze up? i know when my battery was low (not dead) and the weather dropped below zero it cracked and leaked out

 

i know that in cold weather it takes longer for the electricity to flow???

i dunno just some stuff i thought about

it sounds more like the actual lock cylinder or something was acting up to me... usually cold weather starts the battery can't put out enough right? so it wouldnt randomly jump back to full starting potential woould it?

 

sounds like some fishy wiring... or i cuold be totally wrong. (i don't deal with -40 F, much less -40 C!! :eek: COLD!)

I agree with others suggestions.

Personally, I would first look at the cylinder. I am thinking the die-electric grease thats in there is frozen and not allowing stuff to make propper contact.

 

New bat cables are also good adjice but i do not think this is your ONLY problem.

Well I will tell you my lock cylinder acts up but everything works engine wise but sometimes the ACC side of things don't like 5radio blower and all that. If I wiggle the key BLAM there it is just like normal. SOunds like you have a more severe prob than me maybe all that cold cause a wire to crack its coating and is shorting out on something??? Far feched but hell its a JEEP.

I've had similar issues on multiple vehicles over the years and the first thing I check nowadays is the battery cables. More often than not, taking off the cables and cleaning the surfaces will cure my electrical on/off gremlins because sometimes it makes a good connection, sometimes it doesn't. :dunno:

will water drain out? yes. Ice? well, that's probably not going to be draining out any holes. :D I realize you Southerners only see natural ice once in a generation or 2, but it's solid, like the ice you put in your drinks on those balmy February days. :rotfl2:

Yeah, it's gross, as long as it's far enough below freezing it is fine, but the stuff they use on the roads (it's not normal salt, it is worse) will melt till about -15ish, so all this wet slushy stuff gets kicked up into the hole and soaks the carpet... Then the heater evapourates some of it. Then it freezes over night. Then I'm scraping the inside of the windshield in the morning...

 

 

Moral of the sotry - fix hole in heep before the onset of winter.

OH that crap, i hate that stuff... waters down your drink... that stuff usually turns to water in about 2 minutes... hard to keep a coke cold when its 60 in january... (actually refering to the weather yesterday... no lies.)
