JeepFanactic Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I need some advice on what I should be looking for. I really would like a 4.0L with 4wd with short bed. All I have been able to come across is 2wd. How difficult would it be convert to 4wd. I would like to learn how to fix things myself. Is this something anyone can tackle or should I just pass and find something with 4wd. Should I stay away from the 2.5L. The MJ would just be added to the XJ and CJ that I already have. Both are pretty built up. I pretty much just dropped them with the mechanic and got the bill. :shake: I would like to do it myself this time around and learn as I go. The 2wd's are about half what people are asking for 4wd. Will the money I save getting the 2wd even about to what the 4wd's are going for? Thanks for the help.
87Warrior Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 :wavey: Welcome! Spend some time searching the site about the 4wd swap. Several guys have done it here with little to no trouble. The swap basically entails removing parts from a 4wd XJ and installing them in the MJ (Front axle, drive shaft, transmission, transfercase, and 4wd lever linkage that attaches to the tunnel)
JeepFanactic Posted July 7, 2011 Author Posted July 7, 2011 Yea I have been looking through several builds and it doesn't look that difficult. Thanks
Dirteatr717 Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I helped a friend convert his 2door 2wd XJ to 4wd in his driveway, you'll need lots of jacks and jackstands to make things easier, once you get the drivetrain in it's basically something most people could do with some wrench knowledge! I say go for it Good luck!
JeepFanactic Posted July 7, 2011 Author Posted July 7, 2011 thanks for all the input. I guess I narrowed my search to 4.0 with either 2 or 4wd. Part of the fun is the search....thanks
1990 Pioneer 4x4 Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 I agree the SB is a smart choice, but also start with the 4x4. The amount of rust should be one of your primary concerns
