ba10/5 to ax 15 swap NEED HELPPPPPP NOWWWWWW

i have an 88 mj cheif, short bed, 4 wheel drive, 4.0 with the ba10/5... i have the whole transmission/t case from a 96 cherokee... the bellhousing,clutch assy...master cylinder with line and external slave....... its attached to a 231...... yes i know the 96 231 has a 23 spline count as to my poopy 21 in the ba10... so no match up on that. here's one my questions can i take the input outa the 96 t case and put it in mine. and put it in my t case onto the ax15????? Question two the transmission cross member how far off is it i got a welder sooooooo i can fab up some stuff..... BUTTTTTT my biggest question is the rear drive shaft length is it going to stuff my slip yoke into my t case cause that would suckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

My swap was 2wd so the T case stuff beyond my knowledge. The AX15 is the same length as the Peugeot so the drive shaft length should be fine. The AX15 crossmember has a drop section in the center (approx. 1" ) to accept the AX15 mount. You could try to fab something but you are probably much better off locating the correct mount and crossmember.

I believe the inputs do swap over from 231's. The question is, why not use the transfer case that is bolted up to the AX15? The spline count differences is in the inputs, I believe the output splines are the same.

Again... why can't you use the 96's 231?

 

There are issues with the T-case inputs swapping. I'm not sure on the specifics of the generations, but I do know that the tooth pitch for the reduction unit was changed at least once. If they're different pitches, and you swap them... assuming it even went in, it would grind itself to death the first time you used 4 Lo or Neutral.

 

One way around finding an AX-15 crossmember is to do a T-case drop the same amount as the AX-15 crossmember's drop in the middle. Granted, an AX-15 crossmember would be the best option, but those seem to be harder to find than they should be.

 

BA 10/5 and AX-15 are the same length. No driveshaft issues.

And the reason you can't use the 231 from behind the AX-15 is?

 

Different rear outputs right?

 

My suggestion, swap in a pre-96, 23 tooth input, TC with the correct output, then your stock DS will work. Should be fairly easy to

 

find, maybe even put your current TC as part trade.

 

I know this is a controversial issue, but on my 87 conversion I have the 2wd cross member under my AX-15.

There is no difference between 2wd and 4wd crossmembers. The difference is between the AX-15's crossmember, and non-AX-15 crossmembers. The AX-15 crossmember has a notch in the middle to let the trans sit down a bit lower, since the AX-15 is so big. I don't think it's enough of a difference to not let you install an AX-15 with a non-AX-15 crossmember, but it'll screw up U-joint angles.

96 has that funky slip joint boot thingy on the end of the TC. Different length output bearing retainer housing.

= shortened driveshaft.

That would work with the right DS off the 96 up.

Except the 96 would be an XJ, and the rear shaft will not work on an MJ.

correct the 96 transfercase has a 23 spline count and mine has a 21 spline count..... you are correct i want to keep the same drice shafts ALSO my speedo is cable driven not electric so theres a problem so i pulled out the 23 spline input very simple and I'm going to install it into my tcase problem solved..... but wil the ds stay the same i ask again and do i use the whole clutch assy with the ax15

The speedo cable is not a problem. The cable sender and gear should go into the 96 case just fine.

 

You cannot use the newer input in the older case. The gear pitches are different and will either not fit or ruin your case.

 

The sealed output cases are much better anyway. You can drive without the rear driveshaft in, if need be, and not lose any fluid. Your best option is to use the 96 case and just have your driveshaft shortened the inch or so that's necessary.
