1988 Comanche Pioneer

Recommended Posts

This past weekend I bought a 1988 Comanche Pioneer from Chuck Willis in Charlotte, NC who also works at carolina truggies if anyone as ever been by there. It has the 4.0L Renix, Auto Trans(not sure of model) and NP 231 Tcase.

here's some history, the truck was originally owned by an elderly man at the beach and pretty much all he did was go from the his house to the store or to the beach, not a lot of driving. So it only has 77,xxx miles on it. He bought it and had some big plans for it, but also found a sweet deal on an F250 and jumped on it, and had to let this truck go.

So the Good on this truck:

-The interior is IMMACULATE, minus the headliner drooping, not surprising as gravity and time are constants right?

-77,xxx ORIGINAL MILES on a truck that is just as old as I am

-Camper shell kept the bed from getting weathered.

-The bed has lightly been used, few scratches here and there but not many.

-Came with Extra T-case for problem described below.

And now for the bad:

-Anything below the unibody/frame rails, is RUSTED, mainly surface, but a few bolts were almost eaten all the way through and had to be cut off.

-4wd was said to not work (wasnt shifting into gear)

-Someone replaced the windsheild, but did it improperly so now there is rust in the roof panels.

-Due to the nature of being at the beach, there is a lot of salt deposit/rusting going on.

-Exhaust is shot, but was intending on changing it anyways.

Current plans:

-97+ Front grille, fender and door swap

-Replace all suspension that is horribly rusted, clean up and paint what i can.

-Replace axles with HP Dana 30 and Ford 8.8 (hopefully 4.10 gears and Limited Slip in the rear)

-Bed Liner (linex, rhino?)

Future Plans:

-Rustys 4.5" lift kit (coils up front and SOA in the rear)

-Paint (thinking maybe OD green)

Once i figure out how to post pictures I will.

here's an update, Got the front clip off, but it seems every pull a part or junkyard that has/had a 97+ cherokee, has already been picked for its front or it was demolished. SOOOOOO I'm still looking.

I bought a spray on bed liner from lowes, which the paint guy lied to me saying that one can would do a whole bed, three cans down i still find myself needing one more can.

The one good thing i got from pull apart was a Ford 8.8 w/ 4.10 gears and factory limited slip. It was already opened up, but the gear oil left in the cover and what i looked at looks clean, and the inside after you wipe it down looks SHINY!!!! Only downside is that its missing the left axle shaft and brake assembly, but they neatly left the pieces sitting there, i guess one more trip to PAP is in order.

Already started cleaning the diff cover, kinda dirty, but nothing a little cleaning and polishing can't solve.

Still on the look out for a HP Non-disco Dana 30 w/ 4.10s.

Only a little over spray on the tailgate, no tapeing involved,

Diff cover cleaned, sanded, and painted with "underbody" coating. I was out of bed coating, so we'll see how this works, has a kind of rubbery texture.

That is all for now.
