artimus
driving last night and it completely cuts out for about one second then comes back in. it starts running rough before it cuts out i can tell when its about to. Also, its only when I'm at lower(below 3000) rpm's :fs1:
Naterenfo1
Bad ground/Connection on fuel pump maybe? anything to do with bumps? Does it run rough on start?
Kenbob
Besides bad connex to fuel pump could the fuel filter be plugged? That might explain it if it is letting some fuel in, but not enough to keep it running steady. It would sputter as it loses supply and quit until it is replenished. artimus
Bad ground/Connection on fuel pump maybe? anything to do with bumps?Does it run rough on start? it does run a little rougher when i go out to warm it up in the morning but then it runs alright until it starts to cut out. Nothing to do with bumps as far as i can tell

hamilton
Doesn't the 2.8 have a mechanical fuel pump? Had a 2.8 in an '85 Cherokee with Cali emissions, Rochester E2SE carb, and a module in the distributor under the rotor. Had that module go bad twice in 12 years, had the same driveability issues you're citing. Carried a known good one in the tool bag JIC.
JeffN
Check that your distributor cap doesn't have any moisture in it, also make sure you don't have a spark plug wire arcing somewhere, it would act up more when it is wet/damp out.
Naterenfo1
also your timing could be advanced/retarded. Maybe the timing chain hopped, or is worn out? I would check into that. Check compression and see how that all looks. Maybe you have a cylinder or two down. If all the cylinders are compressing low, or at least more than half, you could have that timing issue I talked about earlier. Start with the basics, engines need compression air and fuel to run properly. Check the spark of each cylinder, check plugs, wires etc. maybe a vacuum line rotted out and disconnected? Just ideas, Good luck! -Nate
Pete M
yes,t he 2.8 has a mechanical pump. last time I had issues with my 2.8, it was a bad connection at the power wire going to the coil.
artimus
i just got a new fuel filter and changed all plugs, wires, cap and so it fixed that cutting out problem. those spark plugs were fried and soaked in oil ha ha. But now its barely wanting to start up. I have to floor it to start it and she runs very poor, sounds like its misfiring and won't even idle, just dies. I'm pretty sure its either the fuel pump or carborator. and blue smoke!
cody4359
check that you put the plug wires on the right terminal on the distributir, one wire (2) will make it spit and sputter
artimus
well it was running like a charm right after i got new plugs/wires. could it still be a possibility though like 2 days later?
cody4359
no it would be instantiouse if u had the firing order wrong. pull your plugs again and see if they already got fouled up
muddymj
alll the firing order is right i put them on for him and it was running good i think its his fuel pump now. it sounds like its not getting enough fuel. or the carb. come on fart put in a new motor

Micahs out sick so right now its chillin @ truck trails still And he says he doesnt think it would start if it wasnt getting enough fuel so he thinks carb and that would be explaining the blue smoke. sooooo whos got a 3.4??and i don't wanna go to san diego :hateputers:

Naterenfo1
Blue smoke usually means you are burning oil. Are you sure the parts man gave you the right fuel filter? are you sure its connected all the way?
