mnkyboy
If you have the right wires you should be able to make the pump run, either way you still need to figure out why you only have 4 volts getting to the pump.
Comanche_Fanatic
pump won't run, i hooked the red wire to positive terminal of the battery, and the black wire to the negative terminal. sparks popping all over the terminals but pump did not turn on. mnkyboy
You could try hooking up the pump by itself without the wires.
Comanche_Fanatic
alright, would it still need a ground? not only the black wire going to the neg terminal but another black wire going to the frame of the car?
mnkyboy
No,if you hook positive on one side and negative on the other it should spin.
Comanche_Fanatic
ill try that in the morning, hope it does spin
mnkyboy
Here, this is a generic diagram of how a fuel pump curcuit works. Its not jeep specific but should give you an idea.
Comanche_Fanatic
i just hope there isnt a fuse to worry about. going to test that pump again now
Comanche_Fanatic
took the entire fuel pump out as well as the batt. tested it with 2 wires, and grandma said she may have heard "wind" blowing through it. i think it shouldve been buzzing a bit stronger for me to actually notice. here's a pic of what i just did
Pete M
just an fyi, when testing for voltage in the harness back by the fuel tank, the pump will ONLY get voltage for 1 second after the key is first turned to "run", and then again when the engine is actively being turned over or the truck is running. It does not get power under any other circumstance. between the burnt wire harness and the wrong pump, I think you need to start from scratch, stop screwing around with the bad stuff and replace them both with good and proper parts. and if the bare wires in that harness shorted out, then you might also have burned out a fuse, a relay or even a fusible link. mnkyboy
I don't think there is a fuse,if jims right the front relay is the pump relay. You could check the wire colors he said to check and verify which one matches.
Comanche_Fanatic
k ill try that now, give me a sec
Comanche_Fanatic
great news, i hooked everything, didnt check relay or nothing, but grandma turned the key so the engine can start cranking. and while i tested for volts the pump read 6.74 volts and was running. now all i have to do is put it back in the tank and fill it up with gas, i definitely hope its fixed
Comanche_Fanatic
AGAIN its the same problem, i keep turning the key over and now the negative battery terminal starts smoking. here's a vid
mnkyboy
You have a bad connection at the battery, make sure everything is clean and tight.
Comanche_Fanatic
ill try, theres also extra junky wires connected to the neg terminal, is that causing any problems? I'm pretty sure theyre just for junk, and not for the pump/actual parts. the 2nd PO obviously didnt do a good job on wiring.
Comanche_Fanatic
cleaned the terminals, nuts, bolts, wires, everything with a wire wheel. its all shiny and rustfree now and it stopped smoking. but the engine still won't fire up. Comanche_Fanatic
had a couple friends come over and look at it, one said the wiring was bad and the other said fuel pump. the fuel pump seems more likely and i will replace wiring whenever i can :wrench: . damn rats chewed it off.
