Testimony of an AMC Inline-4 owner

Recommended Posts

I bought an 89 MJ with the inline 150cid (2.5L ) 4 cylinder engine. married to a 4spd stick

And to anyone who says the 2.5 has no balls. I can lay longer, fatter, blacker strips of rubber than any other truck or car at my school, with exception to the '68 Bonneville that a kid owns.

I can get it to lay black on pavement into 3rd gear.

I can spin it on damp pavement into 4th gear

I can rooster tail dirt like no other vehicle I've ever driven (That includes an XJ w/ the 4.0L)

I love My MJ! and I'd never trade the 4cyl for anything. its got all the balls I need, I wouldn't mind a t-case and 5spd tranny, but if I want that, Ill get an XJ

My question is; did a 4cyl 2wd '89 ever come with the Metric Tonne, or a Limited Slip/Positrack from factory? as hard as I try, I can never get just one wheel to spin. always both. and cornering is jumpy, like the wheels are going the same speed, it always clunks around corners.

Check for a locker in it if its jumpy in corners. All you need to do is pull the cover on the diff and there it is.

Also not trying to lecture you by no means BUT I also have a 2.5 and HAD a 4 speed. Yes mine would lay rubber and I could grab all gears except 4th(could on wet pavement) I loved doing it in high school. jamminz.gif But a word of warning is INsert my wonderful story here>>> Ok one day I was leaving a friends house and hit the pavement as I wound 1st tight I slammed it into 2nd then 3rd BUT when it hit third there begun a clanking vibrating noise. and it was loud and vibs got bad once i got to a place to pull over I checked everything out and it looked good so I called my dad and he said to limp home. up to 45 was horrid but after that it smoothed out. I get home and to me and my dads surprise the hogshead on the rear was twisted at a nice and almost straight upward angle. I don't know if this ever has happened to anyone else but my dad said in all his years of weekends at the drag strip he has never seen this happen. We then corrected it to close to normal.(shortened the end ;) ) But then 6 months later the input shaft (or output can't remember which) shredded most of its teeth on my way to school thus fulling teaching me a lesson.

Sorry for the long story but just trying to warn you that your axle SUCKS and the Tranny can't take all the abuse that us kids can dish out. Again this isnt a lecture just thought Id share.

time to upgrade to the 8.8 then let those tires roll until the tranny goes then upgrade to the ax15 with t-case add a front axle then get a hold of pong and see if he won't let you use his cutting torch and cut every thing off that you don't need and your set untill you break something else :jump: jamminz.gif

there is no weight in the rear of an MJ...

of course the tires will spin...

try putting an engine or a full load of wood in your bed and driving down the road.

The 2.5 is a great motor for daily driving and hauling every now and then, but it by no means a power house.

The one real benefit for me is that mine is getting 27 MPG.. I don't know how and I don't care, but i rearly fill it up...

ohh and the plugs/tune up hasent been changed since Clinton was in office ;)

mine leaks at the sending unit, its dripping nicely outside, I filled it up yesterday, over the past 24hrs its dripped roughly an 8th of a tank. its still dribbling. its ticking me off. I may need to drop the tank and replace the entire thing :( I may not, as it won't leak at roughly 3/4 tank.

My O-ring is ripped. So I only fill it about 2/3rd's the way up. But I have the 23 gallon tank, so I usually can't afford to fill it anymore anyway.

u need to drive a lil farther south my friend. i filled up in down for 67 cents the other day

its since gone back up again but not by much

sinny, I filled up with ultra 94 :), plus, why waste gas to drive that far to fill up for 67cents? its not too economical

I normally pay 69c/Litre on the native reservation.

i am at the mercy of the government down here

its 5 minute drive to Tyendinega Mowhawk Reservation. no tax on anything, plus a good load of cars (notably old dodges and jeeps) to pick from, a lot of my friends live out there too.
