JeepinDev89
Ok, here's the deal, now that my new 'manche, the 88, is road worthy my 91 is going through some drivetrain upgrades. It has the 4.0 aw4 and is 2wd. I am getting a 2000 xj 4.0 aw4 4wd and an 88 xj 4.0 aw4 4wd for real cheap. Let me know if you need odd ball parts. But my question is, which swap will be the best for the 91? I was thingking the 2000 but I'm not too positive. I was gonna use the 2000 stuff for the 91 and save the 88 axles for my 88 then find an ax15/231 so that way i still have my 5 speed. Help, I've never done a swap like this, just a couple motors but nothing like this. Thanks Devin
Rymanrph
The 88 will be MUCH easier to swap, but it all depends on what you want, how much time you have and if its worth it to you. I really wanted the newer dash, power windows, locks, etc. To me, part of it is just being able to say, "I did this."
Pete M
How much of a project are you looking for? You could swap the entire XJ guts into your 91. Or you could swap just the drivetrain hard parts of the XJ into your 91.
Eagle
If you mean a complete swap, neither the '88 not the 2000 will swap right into the '91 MJ -- neither wiring harness is compatible. The '88 is Renix, the '91 is early OBD-I, and the 2000 is OBD-II with no coil -- the 2000 XJ 4.0L has individual coils packs on the spark plugs. Either engine could be dropped in and externals retrofitted to keep the '91 harness and accessories, but to do a full upgrade would, I think, require swapping the wiring harness. And the 2000 4.0L is the engine that has the questionable heads.
JeepinDev89
I'm just looking to swap the 4wd over from the 2000 into the 91, maybe the front end conversion, seats etc... but i know the dash is too big of a project for me. Also, what is a suitable head upgrade for the 0331 head? I know it is known for cracking, but whats another option for it? Thanks Devin
Pete M
the dash really isn't that big of a deal. you just need to gut the truck and swap over everything one bit at a time. several guys here have done it and I'm sure they'd love to help you along. if it hasn't cracked yet, it's probably fine. also, tech Qs should really go in the tech forum so more guys will see it and the answers will show up in the searchable database.

JeepinDev89
in MO about 45 mins NW of STL. And actually now that i think of it, the interior is no good. It had a sunroof and was rolled, the whole windshield was smashed in and it looked like the tarps didnt stay on and everything was water damaged. So, I'm just gonna steal the drivetrain. Dad is taking the motor for moms 2000 TJ and i get everything else. After that any oddball parts people want then its off to the JY.
