1987Comanche Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Theoretically it's there to dampen the engine vibration as the 2.5 is a rough running little beast with no balance shafts. The 4.0 is a better balanced engine and doesn't need it. Not sure what would happen if you ran without one though. :dunno:

carnuck Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 They were always zero balanced (inline 4 and inline 6 are inherently balanced) but at lower RPMs any differences in the compression would make them shake slightly so the shock was added to dampen the vibes. The 6 cyl is also smoother because it fires more times between each revolution. Picture someone firing a gun. You know that recoil? The same thing happens when the cylinder fires. Guy with a machine gun doesn't move around as much when he fires because it fires in such rapid succession.
