Need new Seat Belts?

I was thinking about replacement belts yesterday.

 

What is the general rule for belt life? 10 years or 1 accident, which ever comes first? A few years back I recall reading a post on some Jeep forum about seat belt life and the fabric properties/elasticity.

 

Let us know how those belts work. They look good and look like they would work well for the MJ. :yes:

Take a look at your pick a part yard. Then take a look at the Cherokee belts. I did a quick look a month ago when I picked up several female ends to match the bucket seats I put in the truck. The male end worked just fine in belts from a 90/91 Cherokee.

 

Now, there are two different types of Cherokee belts and the same two different Comanche belts. (talking the male end, one has two holes the other one hole). I did have the chance to see that the mounting system in the B pillar of the Comanche looked very similar (if not identical) to the Cherokee. I did not check the stamped numbers on the belts, so don't take this to the bank.

I wondered about XJ belts in my MJ also. But again, they are used, especially the driver side. My retractors still work fine, but the drivers side belts are really fraying, and the female end of the buckle has been taped together too many times. In the case of a bad retractor, anyone know if they can be swapped from passenger to driver side? I will have to take a peek.

Concerning these belts at seatbeltsplus, note they strongly say they are not vehicle specific and may not work in your particular application, but my measurements suggest what they offer should work in an MJ.

Would think they are side specific. You have to turn the belt/reel 180 degrees to fit the other side, that would point the male end to the back of the truck instead of the front.

 

Know the female end of the belt is side specific. Yes, I did try that.

just did that on my truck

got XJ setabelts from a cherokee

 

2 things either you drill a hole on the B pillar to fit the notch on the seatbelt

or just cut the notch on the seatbelt itself (thats what Ive done)

then its a direct fit

I am needing new seatbelts as well. Here's another option that I'll likely try out since the retractable belts are a little cheaper, and local to me:

These appear to come with the retractor, but seatbeltplus doesn't seem to and charge more. Hoffmangroup wins!

EDIT: See page 2 for my review of these belts before you buy.

 

I went down to Hoffman Group and picked up my seatbelts. They look good, but won't be able to install until this weekend, and will update how they work out then. Apparently all seat belts are universal, for all companies selling belts.

 

They gave me a good discount, just for asking. They also said it was okay to post on here my price, and will honor it with anyone that asks.

Ahh. I see. When doing the choosing of year, make, etc, they let you choose the style. For the three point their picture shows a pair of them, but when you actually select it and the color, they show only one. So, the price is per side and not for both like the initial picture showed. SeatBeltsPlus wins on expense but no retractor (have to use the old one) but Hoffman wins having the retractor.

Both companies offer retractable and non-retractable, with Hoffman being the less expensive especially with discount. I don't think the non-retractables are meant to be installed in an existing retractor. Instead they are just like our middle lap belt where you adjust it once, and you're confined to its tightness. Not positive though.

Probably right. Didn't notice the retractable ones at seatbeltsplus. Sounds like Hoffmann is the best way to go price wise given the "special offer" for us "poor" MJ types!

I installed the Hoffman belts. They are okay, I guess. One lap belt had a loose piece of plastic in it and didn't buckle right, so I need to return it. The buckle portion has plastic protection around it which had to be removed to work with my bench seat, which revealed the belt was purple instead of black, so I'm taking that back. The middle lapbelt hole size for the bolt is smaller than the hole size for the 3-points, so you can't use the existing shoulder bolt, instead I used the hardware that came with it and tightened them down all the way. One of the retractables was jammed, but after I called and complained, they sent me instructions on how to fix it.

 

Biggest problem with these universal belts is the molding must be cut, a lot. I haven't decided whether to cut it, or just leave it off. I almost like the look without the panels, but road noise is probably higher.

 

I did notice yesterday that NAPA sells belts. A guy working there said I probably got better quality belts from elsewhere, but I'm not sure how the quality could be worse. I'd recommend anyone to buy locally, either from NAPA, or check other auto parts stores, in case you have the same problems I do and need to return them.

 

Maybe pulling from the junkyard is the way to go. Oh, and don't overtighten the bolts like I did. That screwed everything up big time.
