repaair
New member with a 90' MJ 2 wheel drive 2.5 that is making what I thought was a driveline noise (checked the u-joints, their OK). Anybody have any ideas? Its speed related and doesn't matter if the clutch is in or out, kind of a click, click..... Thanks
Pete M
stone in the tire tread? Somebody wrap a big zip-tie on your driveshaft? :teehee:
abugarcias
Did you check the wheels / tires for debris?
mvusse
How did you check the u joints? Could also be internal to the axle.
repaair
How did you check the u joints? Could also be internal to the axle. I wish it was a rock in the tire. I pulled the driveline out and balanced it (I build them for a living) The thing was wildly out of balance but u-joints OK. I was suprised these things use tiny 1310 joints. Anyway still make the noise, its also load related going uphill its light but downhill it really knocks
HOrnbrod
Anyway still make the noise, its also load relatedgoing uphill its light but downhill it really knocks Happened to me on an XJ - it was the spider gears in the diff. Much worse coasting down a hill than with a load on the diff. Pull the diff cover and take a peek- it will probably be obvious - hopefully.
repaair
Unfortunately I think thats a possiblity. Who has cheap diff cover gaskets?
HOrnbrod
I just clean up both mating surfaces up real well and use hi-temp RTV. No leaks yet.
mvusse
I agree. No gasket needed on a diff cover.
repaair
So after pulling the cover everything looks good. Just gear lube and no shrapnel. Guess it was time for lube change anyway.

repaair
check your ubolts. Loose or broken?
kastein
I was figuring chipped pinion/ring gear teeth, sounds like you got lucky there. Maybe you warped/bent a tooth slightly? Not even sure that's possible with how hard they are, figure they'll probably break instead. Where does the sound seem to come from?
JeepcoMJ
check for warped/stretched ubolts. check your pinion bearing as well. grab the yoke on the diff and shake...any play any direction, means it's bad.
