AMC-MJ Posted May 9, 2010 Share Posted May 9, 2010 My alt failed on my way to a friends house ! The MJ had either 61amp non AC or 74amp AC. Well those are out of stock and over 100 bucks... But the Delco 105 amp & 90 amp alts interchange sort of and only cost 70 bucks in stock ! The 105will fit but requires some shaving the 90 is 1/4" smaller and if you loosen the lower mount bolts then install the top ALT bolt just hand tight then the lower ALT bolt hand tight then that third back ALT bolt hand tight. Then tighten the lower mount bolts then crank down the rest of the bolts and it all lines up good. Shazzam you have an 90-105A alt in stock under warranty and cheap like to boot . . . AMC-MJ Posted May 9, 2010 Author Share Posted May 9, 2010 Photos: If your pulley looks like this you'll need to swap it onto the new ALT: Davco 7801 and Davco 7801-11 the -11 requires a face flip tho . . . Its a very tight fit which is why the lower mount bolts need to be loosened up as the housing is larger and the lower mount tab of the ALT is squared and not rounded the 7801-11 is not threaded on the lower bolt hole but the 7801 is threaded so you'll be double nutted so to speak . . . All seems worth while to me ? Yup the 2.8 V6 4.0 I-6 & 4.7-6.6 V-8s I'm sure are different ! I'm sure they made more then 1 2.5er and I figured this would have been helpful to others. AMC-MJ Posted May 9, 2010 Author Share Posted May 9, 2010 J & H Auto Supply is where I got it from. 7 auto parts stores in town none of them had the OEM alternator in stock wanted 110 bucks for it and would take 1 to 5 days to get with a shipping charge, as where J n H had this stronger alternator in stock for 70 bucks swapped the pulleys and did the face flip on the -11 for me free of charge. I've replaced multiple alternators in various XJs and MJs, and in the old days I've torn down and rebuilt alternators myself ... and I don't have any idea WTF your post is talking about. AMC-MJ Posted May 11, 2010 Author Share Posted May 11, 2010 Well then you should already know that once you remove the alternator you can see the lower mount is a 2 piece mount and has 2 bolt running through it . . . Being you have "Replaced multiple alternators in various XJs and MJs" you should already know this . . . and Should then know the 105Amp 7801 has a threaded lower ear which is also square the 7801-11 also has a squared lower ear which is not threaded but dose require a face plate flip to work so both of these are NOT rounded like the factory alternator, so there for requiring more clearance between the 2 parts of the lower engine side mount. EAR = the tab or bolt hole on the alternator itself not sure what to call it :dunno: . . . I was able to follow the simple instructions the auto parts store guy explained everything as i did above if i was able to understand it and doing in the dark during a rain storm having NEVER changed an Alternator on an MJ or XJ for that matter then clearly some one such as yourself who has done many should be able to figure this out :thumbsup: I guess i'll keep my repairs to myself you guy's continued paying more for less and i'll keep on getting More for my money . . . with less down time The 7801/-11alternator puts out 105 amp's costs $70 and is in stock at the parts stores, the factory 61Amp None AC is $110 takes 1-3 days to get and the 74Amp with AC is $130 and takes 3-5days to get from the local parts store . . . I have a none AC 2.5er so i got 61-105= 46 amp's more of peak out put for 70-110 = $40 less money not to mention it was in stock :D Mike Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
