JeepcoMJ
1996 chevy suburban 6.5L turbo. turn the key, start it...it runs. for 20 seconds. then it dies. mind you, this is a COLD start. it has shown zero signs of PMD issues so far...never just died randomly and needed to cool down. the turbo is seized. it hasn't been able to spool since the owner bought it 3 months ago. told him not to drive it without replacing the turbo...he ignored me. oil pressure is acceptable. I haven't been able to get it to my place to look at it yet, so I haven't been able to test if it's even getting decent fuel pressure. any suggestions? also, will a 2001 gmc 3500 6.5's turbo work in this '96? I'd assume I need a wastegate and new oil lines as well as to check if the lines currently there are plugged...
kro10000
I am by no means an expert on these motors, but i believe the newer style turbo has a computer actuated wastegate, or something... It may possibly be an issue
Sir Sam
On a diesel(any diesel) with this type of symptom I would start looking at the fuel filter(at least as a good place to start).
Geonovast
My guess is the turbo has seized to a point of massive exhaust restriction, and it's snuffing itself out.

Pete M
if you fire it up and let it run til it dies, then try to start it again, does it start? or is it just dead for a while?
JeepcoMJ
if you fire it up and let it run til it dies, then try to start it again, does it start? or is it just dead for a while? it runs for 20 seconds, then won't start for awhile afterwards. I'm not 100% positive what exact symptoms are...I don't even have it here to work on, and this is all what's related to me thus far.
Pete M
really sounds like it could be a fuel filter or fuel pump sock clogging issue. But I don't know anything more than Rob about the 6.5 specifically. :D

Automan2164
Welp, I work in a sea of crappy GM-ness, so I asked my boss who has been working here for 30 years about the 6.5's. (We only have 2 left, but used to have a ton). He said to check the air and fuel filters, and check the lift pump. Lift pump is on the frame rail, and looks like a in line filter. Check it for flow by pulling the filter on top, and cycling the key to see if the lift pump is filling it up before and after the problem occurs. Also, he said the fuel pedals are drive by wire, and to check that, as well as FULL battery voltage from both batteries. I hate to say it, but based on your symptoms, he said injection pump. Rob L. JeepcoMJ
not worried about cost on the parts...injection pump, turbo, wastegate, wastegate solenoid, and fuel shut off solenoid are all @ my house waiting. ordering a new PMD. I'm just gonna replace all of it since all of this is known good and low miles.
Huntingman2706217
ive got a built cummins and I'm currently working on a 6.2 for my XJ... so i know alittle about them... BUT really need alittle more information... the 6.5 is more computerised then the 6.2 and this could mean alot more different parts that it could be... there is a problem with something on top of the motor but i can't remember what it was... whatever it was gets hot real easily... they make a kit to move it so it gets better air flow... think it has somethin to do with controllin the injectors... anyways... if it was the injector pump it woudnt start at all... because a diesel needs the proper pressure in order to run... it could be that even though the turbo was bad it could have been still spinning allowing air flow... and now its locked up causing nothing but a wall... will it start... run 20 seconds... cut off and then it be able to instantly start right back up again and run for 20 seconds again? or do you have to prime the system by bumping the starter again? again I'm just starting messing with the 6.2's and there is nothin to them... and i know alot about the cummins cause mines always broke down... lol... and 6.5's and 6.2's ARE NOT junk... people call them junk because they don't get the power the newer diesels get... but they last just as long and are cheaper to fix when they do break... the may not push 600HP easily but they feel like the same amount of power whether pulling a load or not... JeepcoMJ
6.5's and 6.2's are JUNK. they don't last long, at all. they constantly break, and we put well over 6,000 in repairs into just ONE of them a year at our shop...multiply that times 3, they're worthless. they don't handle miles and don't run worth a damn. Huntingman2706217
lol... i disagree... maybe 6k a year into the whole truck but not just the motor... heck rebuilt from chevy, autozone, whatever... there half that... ive seen plenty with a half a mil on the odo... i like them for a reliable pulling or DD motor just not good turned up for drag racing or something... I just blew my company 6.5 last fall. 270k on it, 15k in repairs in 11 months. and that is low miles for a diesel. we have a 7.3 ford with 462xxx on it that has only ever needed a sending unit, brakes, tires, and the like. they're junk motors, junk design.
