green_miner
So my lwb 86 has a leaking gas tank. i found a new one on cl and promptly bought it. the guy said it was from a lwb 91 so i figured it'd be the same size. i get it home and start lookin at my gas tank and then the new one and the new one is considerably smaller. I'm pretty sure it came out of a swb. the solenoid and filler neck locations seem to match up ok but i havent pulled the old one yet. would it be feasable to put this smaller gas tank into my truck without much hassle? Wildman
A SWB gas tank will fit in place of the LWB tank. In fact, the 23.5 gallon tank was an option over the stock 18 gallon tank. If the tank you picked up is in good condition, and priced right, then use it, unless it really bothers you that you'll be missing 5.5 gallons on a fill-up.........But look at the $$$ you'll save on a fill-up :D You'll only need 2 of the the 3 straps to hold the tank in place. Oh, and I only answered one of you same post :D
Automan2164
You will have to change out the sender/pump out of the later model one, and put in yours. Rob L.

Eagle
Pete is correct. The LWB originally offered two capacities. If Jeep did it the same as the Cherokee, the tanks would be identical on the outside and the small tank would have had a baffle to prevent filling it all the way. (Dumb!) There was only one size tank for the SWB, which was in between the capacities of the two LWB tanks. The SWB tank is definitely not the same size, physically, as either LWB tank. Dunno if you could get a SWB tank into a LWB chassis securely -- I've never seen it and never considered it.
green_miner
the tank is in awsome shape with little rust. the guy included the sending unit and the tank for 50. what modifications will i have to make to the tank to get it to fit.
jimoshel
The tank you received is either a 16 ,originally from a LB, or a 18, originally from a SB. Either one will fit in a LB without any problem. You will only need 2 mounting straps. This covers the physical aspects of the tank. The fuel pump, sending unit will depend on engine size, year.
