brad757
i have a 1989 comanche (i'll upload better pics some other time) it only has 117xxxk original miles on it and runs great i just recently picked it up a few months ago. I started it up the other day and it now makes a VERY loud knocking sound that sounds like its coming from the tranny, its only really noticeable when its idling. when I'm actually driving its sounds perfectly fine. another small symptom is it sometimes stutters very slightly when I'm accelerating. being that I'm 20 with very little vehicular knowledge I'm not quit up to the task of handling this, but a neighbor said it sounds like my torque converter may be loose. i was essentially just trying to get a "this is whats wrong" from someone who knows so any feed back would be nice.
sinkrun
Flex plate may be loose also heard they crack, and welcome to the club.
Geonovast
My 88 XJ did something very similar. Turns out the two bottom bellhousing bolts had jumped ship, and the trans was only being held to the motor by the top two.

brad757
haha i knew what i was getting into, i ship out to boot in a few months so ill have plenty of extra cash to spend on this baby. but i did manage to fix the problem was just some loose bolts on the flex plate luckily i could reach them from below and didnt have to drop out the tranny or anything. Geonovast
Yup, you can unbolt the converter without pulling the trans. They did that on purpose, as you usually leave the converter in the bellhousing when removing the trans or motor.
ride172
I had a knocking noise coming from what I thought was my tranny area too... Only at idle, and it would go away while driving... Turned out to be the exhaust banging on the crossmember due to worn out transmission mount... So definetly don't rule out easy fixes before you tear into something that doesn't need tore....
