Axle issue

Recommended Posts

Was driving to school this morning when all of the sudden i heard a bang and my front end started shaking much worse than it normally does. Pulled over, checked all the linkage and everything up front and it was all tight. Decided to take it back home, couldn't do much over 30 with it due to the shaking. Just got home and looked at it and it looks like the PS axle shaft slid out a little bit, maybe 1/2 inch to where you can see the white plastic ring. Also, when i changed out my hubs, the shafts slid out, but they went right back in when i pushed the hub back in, bolted up fine so i didn't think anything of it. Going to pop open the diff and the whole PS again an see what i can find. Wondering if anyone has ideas on what could have happened

I had the front ps inner shaft on my 89 snap while I was in 2wd on the highway. It nearly ejected the wheel (brakes and all) from the vehicle before I was able to come to a stop.

I trashed that axle, and bolted up a new one.

The U-joint actually shredded its way through the giant pressed on bearing. It was crazy. Same thing. I was driving, heard a pop, and the front end strated to shimmy like death-wobble I got to the side of the road somehow, and when I got out the tire was sitting like this ==-\\

well the shaft is still good, but something is very wrong. When i put the axle shaft back in place, the end rested up against the rod looking thing in the middle of the spider gears. I don't know if there is supposed to be something holding the shaft in, but it seems like there is a piece missing, like a spacer to keep the shaft at the correct length. :wall: :help:

Sorry, should change my sig, i only have the 92 now, sold the XJ. But here are a few pictures of what i have.

This is the outside of the shaft with the plastic ring tight up against the axle tube.

And this is the position of the axle shaft on the inside. The red arrow is pointing to the shaft itself, the green to the rod looking thing its touching, disregard the yellow

I'm by far not a D30 expert, but being that there's no C-clips, I bet that's not supposed to be that close, and the U-joint side shouldn't have moved really at all, since the unit bearing is what keeps the shaft in place.

Yank the shaft, I bet you that's your problem.

After inspecting the the PS axle shaft and seeing nothing wrong with it, i have been thinking of ideas to fix it as it sounds like its not too common of a problem  . I was thinking of adding a spacer of sorts similar to the plastic ring already on the shaft. Probably not the best plan, but i just want my jeep back :(

something similar to this :dunno:

Chris, I’ve been poring over this half the evening, and going over the diagrams in my factory manual, and I’ll be darned if I can figure out any possible way for the PS axle to move out of the axle shaft unless the bearing carrier has somehow been pushed out of the steering knuckle bore. In your original post on this thread, you indicated that you had changed out the hub at some point. Is it possible that the three bolts that hold the rotor backing plate and hub bearing carrier to the steering knuckle have come loose? I just don’t see how the axle shaft could move out otherwise, even with a snapped intermediate shaft.

Thats what i was just thinking about. The bolts were definitely on there good. I'm beginning to think that the axle shaft is supposed to be like that. The universal on the front driveshaft has been going bad, and i wonder if it finally went all the way, and thats causing the shake. If anyone has a non CAD axle and they could check there PS axle shaft for me and see where that plastic ring sits that would be awesome

If you changed the hub, you had to have removed the axle retaining nut. It's supposed to be torqued to 175 foot-pounds. Is it possible that you skipped this step and that the outer axle isn't properly mated to the hub?

Also, if you replaced a hub, are you certain you installed the correct hub? The hubs changed, I think in 1990. They are not interchangeable. If you used the wrong hub for a '92, that might result in making it appear the axle "got longer." (I'm not sure on that -- it has been a long time since I had the two style side-by-side for comparison.)

i made sure the axle nut was on good and tight, and the hubs should be right, the DS is fine and hasn't had any problems so i think they're the right ones. I think when i get home i am going to put it back together and pull the front driveshaft an see if that is what is causing the shake, who needs 4 wheel drive any way

I didn't realize that the '92 MX had a non-CAD axle, so that kinda blows my theory. I was thinking the hub bolts loosened, and the axle shaft moved out, causing the intermediate shaft pin to pull out of the axle shaft bushing, pushing the intermediate shaft into the diifferential as in your picture. There is a C-clip in the diff on the intermediate shaft of a CAD axle, but I don't know about the non-CAD.

i wonder how much of my problem is coming from my front drive shaft pretty much falling apart. The universal at the axle has so much play that i can almost take it off with just my hands

Well, if it's as bad as you describe, I'd say you found at least 90% of your problem........
