The world has ended

I drove my comanche for the first time on the road today!!! jamminz.gifjamminz.gifjamminz.gif

4x4 swap successful!!!

I geared her up got to the end of the driveway and SNAP!!! My speedo cable broke from behind the dash!!! I am so up $#!& creek!! Speeding on an army base gets your car impounded.

I didn't let that stop me, I wheeled tonight for my first time tonight, legally... and I hit the first bump a little too hard and the GOD DAMN passenger mirror flew off!!!! I have it duck taped on for now, but it isn't good considering I need my safety before I run out of 10 days.

To the real issue here...

I have DEATH WOBBLE like you wouldn't believe and the truck isn't lifted, 0 lift. I did notice however that the steering felt a little loose, is there a driveway fix for this issue, or am I also up the creek with this one?

Budget is the goal here boys.

So your finally on the road......... :jump:

Do you have True death wobble.......or just front end shimming?????

Check all the front end components, TRE's, Track bar (mainly at the frame end) tires out of balance, alignment???

Did your speed-o cable just pop off the cluster, or the inner cable broke??? You can get a replacement cable if that the case........I'm sure after all this work, you don't want an Impounded MJ from the MP's

Just go very slow.

I noticed that my steering wheel isn't centred straight when the truck is going straight. I can live with that, not an issue (I think). I might take it to the shop for an alignment.

Not a bad plan. If the alignment shop is worth a poop, they'll tell ya what's wrong.

what about my mirror??? I kinda need that.

Only if you want to see behind you on the right side........... :teehee:

Junk yard or e-bay one up north :dunno:

pretty easy replacement.

The speed-o cable..........I think Rockauto carries them.

If you steering wheel is off center, that would be the adjustment on the drag link. But, check all the TRE's and other parts before you take it into a shop, but it might need a good front end alignment, even at stock height.

You swapped in a 4WD front axle? Did you just bolt it in and drive, or did you make some attempt to check the alignment? Caster angle is an important factor in the death wobble equation (although you haven't told us enough to know if you actually have death wobble). The caster is adjusted by adding or removing shims in the lower control arm frame pockets. I'm going to guess that you didn't know anything about that (which is not a mortal sin) and just threw the "new" axle in there with whatever shims were set up for the original axle.

You need an alignment.

i had bad ball joints which caused my death wobbleon my MJ. i just needed to tighten my trackbar bolts on my XJ. Also with the speedo cable, check your length! ill take measuremnets for you tomorrow because there are 2 different lengths. I have an 89 swb 4.0l auto 2wd and for some reson i have a 4cylinder 4x4 length speedo cable. they are different lengths by far. i got mine at advance autoparts too, not a universal kit but an actual MJ cable. goodluck!

haha all you need to pass mechanical here in ontario is the center mirror and one side if you look at my pics all i have is the one and its the cheapest one i could find in the parts isle... i put it on the day before i got my mechanical and its only starting to go bad now.. not bad for $20 and a rushed install

Congrats on the 4x4! I am halfway there, front axle is in but I haven't swapped the transmission and transfer case yet.

For that mirror, pick up the mirrors off a 97 or later XJ in the yard... they are much bigger and you can actually see stuff with them! I didn't like the styling at first but it's growing on me, especially because I can see now...

If there is not a good priced junkyard near you PM me, there is an all you can carry at a local yard here next weekend. I can pull you a set of 97+ mirrors (maybe even powered, heated mirrors though you will have to wire them yourself) for extremely cheap, if I manage to pick a set up I will let you know. Should be under 20 bucks including shipping I think.

i checked the length of a spare speedocable i have. its out of a 1990 4door XJ with 4.0l auto and 4x4 and the length was roughly 75inches. mine that was in my MJ (4cylinder cable in a 6 cylinder truck) was about 10-15inches shorter than the XJ cable. goodluck!

I got a new speedometer cable from Advance Auto, but the cable in there now looks like it has enough slack to make up the difference. We'll see.

I've got my axles swapped too, but my transmission and transfer case is waiting in my garage. Congratulations on the swap.
