Not sure why this was stated like this?,

"Mopar (and AMC) Power"

Engine:

as there was no mopar involved with this cars engine. or the rest of the car for that matter. reading this makes me think its just some mopar fanatic trying to make believe this car had some relationship to mopar when it was made?? it wasn't

Calling the Machine a Mopar is an insult to AMC. The article also had some inaccuracies that I caught, and probably some I overlooked.

  • [*:26yhehru]AMC got into Trans-Am racing in 1968, two years before they signed Penske as the lead team. The first two years the program was run by Ronnie Kaplan Racing, and they did ... nothing much.
[*:26yhehru]I don't remember about the Machine, but the 1969 and earlier AMCs used Carter AFB carburetors, in 1970 they changed over to Autolites. If the Machine still used a Carter, it was unique in the product line.
[*:26yhehru]The Hornet wasn't in design in 1970, it was introduced in 1970. The Rebel Machine did not replace the Hurst SC/Rambler (American), the SC/Rambler was replaced by the SC/360 Hornet.

These are cool cars. I've always been a fan of the MY72 Matador... stylistically a touch more modern while still having "the look".

For the record, I hate when the term "Mopar" is used with anything Jeep or AMC related; even the modern Chrysler era Jeeps. It offends my ears.

Most articles about AMC products are rife with mistakes.

:agree:

Which continually dumbs down the 'common knowledge' out there when it comes to anything AMC related.

One of the worst things about driving an AMC car is listening to all the mistaken drivel as 'AMC experts go on and on, while 'complimenting' your ride. :shake:

"Ford sent their out of tolerance 390's over to AMC for a good price, the engines were so good, even out of spec ones ran great bla bla bla..."

"AMC 401's were really Chevy 396's that failed spec and had to be bored .030, bla bla bla"

"AMC bought the old/worn tooling from Ford Mustangs, Dodge Darts, bla bla to build its cars"

AMC's Javeline was a pretty bad dude too. I don't know much about them but they are dead sexy

There are a few Javelins hanging around at that AMC place. All this Machine/Javelin/Hornet talk might end up with me coming home with one.

How rare is the Machine/Expensive are they?

For AMC's, they're one of the most expensive 'regular' models (AMX/3, SS/AMX & other specials not included),

for limited edition, high profile musclecars, (compared to other makes) they're still dirt cheap.

Parts are where the price will kill you,

I linked some Rebel Machine wheels on Ebay here last month, absolutely ridiculous prices (and that's usually without the trim rings, or centercaps).

They also used a unique intake manifold that goes for a pretty penny.

My (1971) Javelin actually came stock with Rebel Machine wheels, so I have a set, but I really hesitate to run them because of their value/expense to replace.

(I run the 72-74 style 15x7's instead).

Here's a Machine on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AMC-70-r ... sQ5fTrucks

Its being sold by a non-AMC car collector/dealer, so I'd guess the reserve is set pretty high.

(also notice even this kazillion dollar 3,538 mile version DOES NOT have the correct Machine Wheels & Intake on it)

A: Thank you ill call when i find one.

Q: Hi,one of my dream cars here.So the car was originally this color scheme? And motor rebuilt In reasonable time ago if you know? Thanks Jon Apr-01-10

A: sence restoration it might have 1000 miles and yes it a factory white car only 1000 made,

Q: How is the engine? Does it burn any oil or smoke? Mar-30-10

A: very strong engine , lots of power and runs and sounds great,it don't smoke or make any funny noises

Q: First thing, NICE! Are the stripes on the car reflective? I see some AMC paperwork in the photos, are do you have? Thanks Mar-29-10

A: the stipes on the car are reflective i have a few small littrue on this car.

Q: Hi,The car looks nice, good ad, but I have some questions,if I may:1- any info if this is all "numbers matching" -OE engine, trans ,etc.? 2- do you have the OE exhaust manifolds, intake manifold ,carb, fastners, etc.? Looks like in the pics it has headers, aftermarket intake /carb-,ETC. 3- any other rust repair that you know of? Rockers, floor, etc? 4- any docs/ or at least some more info of the restoration? body work, engine rebuild, etc? -Thanks for your time Mar-29-10

A: i believe it to be # matching but not foresure don't have a valave covertag.no i don't have any thing but a car & title.the haeders& intake/carb are aftermarket.i don't know of any more rust repair.

Q: What brand wheels are on the vehicle?? Also, can you supply a pic of the body data plate from inside the left door showing the trim build codes?? Thanks, Jim. Mar-29-10

A: not sure the wheels but they say american motors on them,#s body 033645 model 7019 trim 051f paint 25a not sure what this # means w034605

Q: Whats your local price? Looks good, any other visible rust repair? Is the engine tag on the front of the passenger side valve cover? If so, whats the letters/numbers? If not look on the back of the drivers side. Thanks, Rick. Mar-29-10

A: its hard to see but i think the # on the back of the block is 8180806 , under the motormounts on the bottom it says 390 on both sides.thats all i can find

Q: where are you located in middletown? when can the car be seen....thank you Mar-28-10

A: 1860 s univrsity blvd 45044 , 10 til 6

The low miles is very nice (if documented),

but no valve cover tag (a big deal to me), wrong wheels, and wrong intake/carb/exhaust mainfolds (and assumed lack of emissions stuff) kills it for me.

Currently @ US $20,300.00 Reserve not met

My brother owned an SC/Rambler for awhile, and I used it as a daily driver during my last year in graduate school. The thing was awesome fast, and we had put on a standard (non-scoop) Rambler American hood so it was a total sleeper. I came home one weekend and stopped by to watch the end of one of our Javelin/AMX club autocrosses. After the competition was over, they allowed spectators to run their cars through the course. The SC/Rambler was on cheap, skinny highway tires, not at all prepped for autocross ... and I ran a time that would have gotten me third place for the day. With the scoop, it ran a 13.6 second quarter mile in stock trim.

In many ways I'm sorry I didn't buy it from him when he sold it, but I didn't have the cash at the time so ...

Good story. jamminz.gif

I have a 'one that got away' story,

I saw a decent builder SC/Rambler + a 69 Rambler parts car in someone's yard about a mile from here,

so I stopped in to see the guy.

He was talking about how much work he'd done on it, when I asked if he'd sell it, he said something like 'I have atleast 8 in it now",

that was way over my head (and not worth it back then) so I passed it over.

The Brookline AMC show was a couple weeks later, so I passed the info on to someone random guy there.

(this must've been 1988, or 1989).

They bought it.

The '8' he had into it (I assumed $8,000) was 8 HUNDRED. :rotf:

Oh well. :dunce:

When people do that to me, I always ask. I have had some one tell me 12 for an MJ with a plow, I got excited because a decent shape 1,200 MT MJ with plow was a good deal. But, when I said 12 hundred, he made it clear he meant THOUSAND.

Thanks, but no thanks. :D
