skeletor
Could a loose vbelt/ or also one that has a streaked sidewall be the culprit responsible for my a/c sucking (aka not exactly working, but works sometimes), power steering sticking and electrical battery charge not really existant? Pete M
sounds like it's time for a new belt adjusted to the proper tension. If you've never touched the adjusting bolts, start spraying them down with PB Blaster now, and every day til you do the work.
skeletor
okay, upon further inspection, everything seemed to be checking out. I was able to give the belt adjustment through the adjustment bolt just fine, I'm as tight as should be, tight at 90 degrees. still some noise. checked all my pulleys. It seems the part of the belt on the fan pulley is 1/4 inch off. do i just loosen the entire belt, put it in place and tighten? does the fan pulley alone need to be aligned/tightened? Theres some slight fraying on the inside of the belt, but i should be able to diagnose and align with the belt- its not shot- yet. though i will say i will be getting one in a week. i just don't want to throw a new one one with a bad pulley. AmJay
Fraying on the inside and not tracking on the fan pulley? You need to take a closer look at your harmonic balancer. Sounds like it's coming apart. The inner metal around the crank should be flush with the outer metal weight if it isn't it's starting to separate. Also, is the belt off track on the harmonic balancer?
skeletor
its a busy week at work, i'm not gonna be able get to it till the weekend. ill update the post by then. I'm thinking its the harmonic balancer....
skeletor
Ok, so i crawled underneath and took a good look at the harmonic balancer. It looks fine, the rubber looks great, the belt not separating at it, nothing turning funny. the metal flush. I'm at a loss, the fan belt is the only belt that is out of place. I'm going to get a new belt tomorrow and see if the carquest belt from the previous owner installed is a pos. I did however disconnected the battery and the car died, only to start it up again to have no power..... looks like I'm pulling the alternator tomorrow too. any tips on the easiest way to get it out? or any suggestions as to why in the hell the alternator is so f......... low? arent jeeps meant to be ran off road? Wildman
Well.......the positive off the post proved your alternator is shot  Last one I changed........I took the battery out, and the battery tray, and had plenty of room to work on the alternator. I know others have done it from the bottom side.......me, I don't like laying on the ground  Why is it so low :dunno: Ask the AMC engineer that designed it that way  For Serpentine belts........I pay the extra $10 for the better ones, had way too many cheaper belts squeal after a 1000 miles :headpop: Oh, and stick with a good name, like Gates or Delco, not the 'store' brand.
