jeepjunkee
Just picked me up a 89-91(internal slave) ax15 with np231j tcase crossmember mount master cyl and pedal setup for complete swap. I don't need pedals but got em anyway. I am sure there is a build thread somewhere in these pages but too lazy to find. lol. My question is what are some parts i can reuse and what are some parts i need for this swap? My jeep is an 88 peugeot equipped. I am gonna clean the trans tcase and get a new clutch before i start the swap. Can i reuse my flywheel shift linkage etc. Any and all info is helpful and appreciated. Thanks
Geonovast
You can reuse your flywheel, shift linkages should be the same, you got the x-member and mount so you're good to go there... Driveshafts will be fine as the Pukey and AX-15 are the same length. I think the only thing on your list that you're missing is the pilot bushing. comanche09
If it is a Renix AX-15 (I have a 1990) then you can use the same Pilot Bushing (1991 is HO and would require the CJ-5 one).
jeepjunkee
I seen that novak had the pilot bushing for the swap for like 4 bucks and some change. So this should be a fairly easy bolt on since i have the early years ax15?
Geonovast
Should be a pretty straightforward swap. Some advice: 1. Replace those top two torx head bolts with hex head bolts. Grade 8 replacements are about $1 at most. Despite what some people on here have said... there's really no realistic reason to put those back in unless you have no choice. Or do what Pete does, and replace them with studs to help with lining up the trans. 2. Remove the CPS from the bellhousing before you remove the pukey, and reinstall it after you bolt up the AX-15. It might be a pain to do with the trans attached, but you won't risk breaking it. Unbolting and bolting that back on isn't too bad with the front shaft removed, which you obviously have to do anyway. 3. PB the hell out of the crossmember bolts. They love to break, and it's not fun to remove broken ones.
jeepjunkee
Some great advice i appreciate it but i am a dummy whats the CPS on the bellhousing?
Geonovast
Crankshaft Position Sensor. It's up on the top of the bellhousing, on the driver's side. Two 11mm bolts hold it in. Be careful not to drop these into the bellhousing when you're reinstalling.. You'd have to pull the trans back if you can't fish them out of the starter hole. jeepjunkee
Man do i feel dumb i should have known that! Is the CPS off the ax15 compatible with my wiring or do i gotta cut and splice? And to clarify on the pilot bushing will mine work or do i need the adapter PB?
Pete M
87-90 CPSs are not swappable with 91+ CPSs. totally different operating systems.
comanche09
If your AX-15 is a mid '89 to '90 model, you don't need the adapter PB.
Geonovast
You'll reuse your old CPS. Unbolt it from the pukey, and bolt it onto the AX-15. ALL Renix Jeeps use an identical CPS... 4.0, 2.5, auto, manual, doesn't matter. CPS is the same. 91 is an oddball year... the sensor itself is the same as the 92+, but 91 has its own plug. jeepjunkee
Any suggestions on a new clutch kit?
BORDENCOMANCHE
Yeah, get one with a new slave included in the kit. and Watch out for oddities in the size of the disc/pressure plate. Most parts companies are not perfectly clear on the whole ax15 and ba10/5. I learned this when I ordered a mount for a pukey only year on my 88 and a ax15 mount showed up. But there are some nice kits that come complete.
BORDENCOMANCHE
Oh an one more thing, don't break the little tabs off the new slave and if your reusing your slave, make sure you use the slave mounting pin and that you reset it (squish down) the throwout bearing and lock it in place with the little tabs, this is essential in properly lining up your setup.
