jmartinez1228
So i may know the answer to this but Id like to be sure about it. When i went to start the truck up this morning I barely able to get it into gears and had to keep pumping the clutch to switch gears. i managed to make it back to my house and popped the hood to find out there was no fluid in the clutch master cylinder. I filled the resevoir up and started pumping the clutch but the fluid wasnt moving at all. Now i'm under the assumption that either the master cylinder is busted or I have to bleed the system because I let it run dry. Also when you push the clutch in you can see little bubbles coming up i the resevoir. My buddy was telling me the clutch was shot but I never had any problems with the clutch slipping. freakjeep93
you would probably have to belled the system . or you throw out bearing my be shot
pingpong
Check to see if your firwall by the fuse block is wet.. if so you have a leaking clutch master cylinder... if not more then likely it is your clutch slave cylinder
Geonovast
A bad slave/master cylinder will not result in the clutch slipping, but quite the opposite. If there's fluid missing, there has to be a leak somewhere. As suggested, check your fuse box. It's the most common place for the fluid to go when the master leaks, and if it's there, you need to pull all the fuses out, and douse it in electrical cleaner. If you don't you'll be chasing electrical gremlins for the rest of the truck's life, or until the box is replaced. What year/engine your truck is will help, A LOT. jmartinez1228
It's an 86' sorry. When I went to put the fluid in this morning I didnt notice any fluid under the master cylinder. The tranny is covered with liquid but I couldnt tell if it was oil from the oil leak i recently had or the slave cylinder but I'm not exactly sure where the slave cylinder is. Its a 2.5 with a 5spd 4x4. After doing a little digging I believe my tranny is an ax5.

Geonovast
Good news, you lucked out with the year. 86 was still an external slave cylinder. You can replace the entire hydraulic clutch system without removing the transmission.

Geonovast
Externals, yes. Internals, no. Your slave cylinder is located on the passenger side of the bellhousing. The only PITA thing about it is getting at nut on the top stud.

Its only $33 so ill start there. Does anyone happen to have a picture of the slave cylinder on the housing? a buddy of mine is going to help me but he just want to see a picture. One more thing where would i find the fill hole for the tranny fluid? I picked up some lucas tranny fluid and usually on my old cherokee id seep it down the dipstick hole but I can't seem to find that on this. Maybe I'm just that blind. Sorry for all the questions but i tried to get the service manual and they didnt have it in stock and they said it would take a week to come in. Eagle
Why are you rushing out to buy a slave cylinder? The way I read the posts in this discussion, you have not determined if the leak is from the master cylinder, the slave cylinder, or the line that connects them. If you checked under the master cylinder from the engine compartment -- that is NOT where they leak. The leak follows the operating rod through the firewall and drips down onto the fuse panel inside the passenger cabin, where it corrodes the contacts for the fuses. That's where you need to check. IMHO, given that the truck is an '86, I think you should do a preemptive strike and replace both. I also suggest buying the parts from a Jeep dealer. For some reason, the experience of other owners has shown that hydraulic clutch parts from any other source typically don't last more than about six months. jmartinez1228
I'm buying the slave cylinder because its the cheapest part to buy and if it needs to be replaced then i minus will replace it now. I called the jeep dealership around here and they don't have it in stock and it would take a few days. The reason I doubt its the master is because I wired up my fog lights over the weekend and saw no fluid or anything dripping inside the cabin at all so thats why I'm assuming its the slave. I don't have much time and i don't have much money to replace both so Ill repalce the cheapest part and go from there. Will it work? It may or may not but I'm going to start from there. Before you go buying up another internal slave, consider looking around for an external slave conversion. A little more work at first, might end up running a couple more bucks, but you will thank yourself if you ever have issues again.
jimoshel
I would bleed the system first before I started buying replacing parts. Then Gunk and a hose down. Cleanliness really helps looking for leaks and or working on stuff.
