AmJay
My used manual window regulator arrived today. How hard is that to install? The old one uses some huge pop rivets. I'm assuming I just drill it out and find some big pop rivets and a bigger gun. Then just pop it in. The glass is laying in little pieces in the bottom of the door. I have another piece of glass. And... I like the vent windows but they just flop in the breeze. The bolt with the spring for adjusting the tension has come loose on the vent window frame. Is there an easy fix for that? I image the frame is hard to find. Also the parts Comanche has fixed vent windows so no parts there. Anyone want to trade? Mac...
Boilermaker
I'm assuming I just drill it out and find some big pop rivets and a bigger gun. Drilling the rivets out was the worst part of the swap, nothing i'd want to do again. when i replaced my manual regulators with electric ones from a newer XJ, the XJ regulators were fastened with bolts. Those bolts fit right into the hole left by the rivets without any modification. You should be able to find those bolts in any 94-96 XJ, and probably other years. Eagle
The vent windows always leaked. They were an extra-cost option, which I foolishly ordered on my '88 Cherokee. When they leaked and I took it to the dealer under warranty, the zone rep said the factory had a fix -- they would replace them with the fixed windows. But they wouldn't refund what I had paid for operable windows. I gooped up the channels with silicone grease from NAPA and that stopped the leaks, but only if I didn't open the vents. I had a/c, and I don't smoke so there was no need. Since you'll have the door apart anyway and you have a parts truck with the fixed "vents," I would advise that you take the opportunity to swap the fixed windows into your good MJ. Otherwise, get some clear silicone RTV and glue 'em shut.
AmJay
Thanks for the help guys. I just looked at the replacement regulator again. The holes are threaded so it must have come out of an XJ. I'll probably bolt them in. I have been on the fence whether to go with the fixed vents or not. I still can't make up my mind. Okay, I guess I better get to work on fixing this. Mac...
mnkyboy
IIRC i knocked the pin out of the center of the rivets then drilled them,I'm trying to remember for sure how i ended up doing it but it only took about 5 min to remove all the rivets. i had the new regulator in and the truck together in like 20-30 min. mine was from an XJ and rivited in but i just used nuts and bolts instead. AmJay
I was ready to go until I realized the wife's Christmas lights were using my last extension cord. Instead I replaced the broken fresh air hoses and vacuum lines. Runs a little smoother but still have the emissions light. Found a 1989 Comanche Owner's manual in the wreaked Comanche's glove box. If anyone needs one PM me and I'll throw it in the mail.
